This is him?
I turn to look at 10K to make sure if he is positive this is "the Murphy", and with a short nod my doubt is put to rest.
I slowly remove my gun from Murphy's head, and back away. I holster my gun, and look to 10K.
"Nice girl you got there 10K, where did y'all find her?" Murphy ask getting off of his knee's. His hands went to the back of his head where I held my gun at, and he began to rub it.
He starts to look me over, and I begin to shift uncomfortably on my feet.
Within a short instance 10K is right in front of me shielding my body from his intense gaze.
"You don't worry about her, it's none of your business." He spits venomously towards Murphy.
"Oh." He says like he just put the last missing puzzle piece together. "You like her."
I felt the heat creep its way onto my cheeks. Thinking of 10K liking me, has my stomach turning over in anticipation.
He likes us! He likes us! The voice inside my head comes back.
I don't think he does...
You can't think like that, he actually might! She sounds so sure of herself.
I felt myself begin to smile, but looking to Murphy and the smirk on his face, I stop myself.
He keeps looking between 10K and I, that incredibly annoying smirk still playing on his face.
I wonder what would happen if I smack it off?
Before I could test my theory, 10K says something that makes those damn butterflies come back into my stomach.
"Yes I do, so back the **** off. She's MINE." He says wrapping his arms around my waist possessively.
WAIT...
"Okay calm down man, I was just wondering." Murphy says putting his hands in the air to surrender.
I stand still in shock, wondering where the hell that side of 10K came from, and why he called me "his". But my wondering comes to an end, when I notice that 10K's outburst seemed to attract the Z's outside.
Looking in the same direction I have, 10K slowly lets go of my tingling sides. I instantly miss the warmth of the electricity flowing through my body from his touch, but I quickly snap out of it and focus on the Z's now approaching the store.
I quickly get in my defensive stance, and pull my bow off from around me. 10K gets out his knife from its holster, and charges ahead. He begins to dig into every Z's head that comes too close.
I quickly follow suit and let my instincts kick in. We are giving it our all, but it seems like there are more Z's coming out of nowhere.
"Murphy, call them off!" 10K pants, clearly loosing energy.
I could see a few Z's stop moving, but not enough.
"There are too many, I can't hold them all!" He warns us.
10K and I both nod in understanding, and continue to fight the Z's off.
The heard starts to surround the store, trapping us from escaping. Just then I hear a gun shot from the other side of the street.
Some of the Z's brake apart and begin heading in the direction the shot fired, but the others seem too adamant in trying to box us in.
Soon enough I run out of my arrows. I shoulder my bow and reach down to my other thigh holder and pull out my Blackhawk CQD Combat Folder knife.
My grandfather gave it to me just before the Z.A., and I never went anywhere without it.
A Z became too close to 10K for my liking, and I quickly react. I jump in front of him and tackle the Z to the ground.
We start to rumble together as I try to reach for my knife that has slid across the floor, and it tries to bite my left arm that I am using to push its body away from mine.
Just as the Z is about to clamp down on my exposed flesh, my fingers wrap around my knife. With all the force I have left in me, I quickly jab the knife into the Z's scull, and it instantly becomes dead weight.
I don't have time to bask in the fact that I'm still alive, because another Z heads my way.
I quickly get the now limp Z off my body and jump to my feet. Just in time, I grab my knife and plunge it under the Z's chin and up to the brain.
Just when I feel all the weight of the Z come down on my knife, I grab its head and slowly pull the knife out. As soon as his body drops, I realize it was the last Z to kill and everyone was staring at me.
When I say everyone I mean; Ronda, Addie, Doc, Murphy, and 10K.
My cheeks instantly feel hot and surrounded in color. I quickly put myself to work to avoid the stares, by collecting my arrows.
"What the hell Murphy?" I heard Addie ask.
"What did I do?" He ask innocently.
"We don't have time to argue," Ronda cuts in, " because of Murphy we have to pact up and move out."
Her tone left no room for arguments, so we all got our things and started heading North towards Canada.
"Jasmine, are you okay?” The solemn look on his face gives way to his underlying feeling; guilt.
I can tell he needs some type of reassurance, so I do the only thing I can think of.
I cautiously reach out for his hand, and interlock our fingers with a small squeeze.
His smile proves it was the right move. His shoulders relaxed, and we both start walking out of the store, meeting up with the others.
“Good job, kid.”
I look up to see Warren grinning at me. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot. Maybe leaving was the best choice for me after all.
