Chapter 17 - A Day Away
We travelled for a long time and Dix and I were only a day's travel away from the Capital.
We rested in a small village and managed to get through the night without doing it.
I couldn't sleep... my decision weighed too much on my mind.
Choose love... or the safety of my whole kingdom...
As we departed the next morning, Dix was perky and happy per usual, telling me stories and jokes that made me laugh.
I then turned around and looked right at him, making him mirror my serious expression.
Dix Aveguard
What's wrong, Rose?
Rose Riverback
If I choose him, then I lose you, someone I care about.
Rose Riverback
But if I choose you... I'll be abandoning my mother's dying wish of protecting her country.
Rose Riverback
Both instances, I hurt someone I love.
He lifted up my cheek and saw tears running down my cheeks.
Instead of wiping them like he usually does, he smiled.
Dix Aveguard
You love me...
I never really thought about it...
I love his handsome face and the way he treats children.
I love how he cares about me and only seems to have eyes for me.
But if I can't think of a valid reason, couldn't that mean that I'm... in love with the idea of love?
And if that is the case, it doesn't matter who I pick.
Rose Riverback
This is breaking me...
Rose Riverback
I don't want to hurt anyone...
He smiled and patted my head.
Dix Aveguard
You can't please everyone. Sometimes, you've got to make a choice and cut corners.
I bit my bottom lip, annoyed with myself.
Rose Riverback
If that is the case... and I have to hurt someone...
Rose Riverback
Is it okay if I hurt you?
He then looked down at me and instead of frowning or snapping at me, he smiled.
Ruffling my hair, he kissed the back of his hand.
Dix Aveguard
That was the right choice.
Dix didn't have one sliver of sadness in his eyes. Was he acting or... did he never love me in the first place?
A thing to use to satisfy his own carnal desires?
Or did he want to play with my heart and break it?
I remained silent for the rest of the trip, clenching my fists in my dress.
We arrived at the palace just as the evening rolled in.
I kept my hood up as I looked around.
This country was different than my own. Everyone looked genuinely happy. They greeted each other while closing up shop and children helped the elderly cross over the street.
We reached the gates and Dix got off of his horse, showing the document to the guards that allowed us in.
For some reason, he covered his face while doing it though.
I was escorted inside, and I followed Dix obediently and took off my cloak per his request.
As we walked up stairs, we reached the throne room.
My fiancée and future husband is inside...
I'm giving up my own happiness for my country. It's the best...
The servants opened the door and to my shock, I found that the throne was... empty.
