Third Person's Point of View
Kageyama Tobio walks to school every morning.
But this time, he’s holding hands with Tsukishima.
Kei has his headphones on, but Tobio feels an occasional squeeze on his hand that lets him know that Tsukishima is paying attention to him.
Butterflies flutter in Tobio’s stomach when he looks down at their intertwined hands.
He’s too busy trying to figure out why this is happening to realize that Kei had taken his headphones off and is talking to him.
Tsukishima waves his free hand in front of Tobio’s face and laughs a little bit when Kageyama finally looks up, eyes wide.
Normally, Tsukishima laughing at him would make Tobio’s blood boil...
...but this time there’s no malice in it.
Tsukishima actually looks sweet.
‘Did I just think Tsukishima is sweet?!’
Flustered, Kageyama lets go of Tsukishima’s hand as they reach the school.
They have to go separate ways for class anyway.
He suddenly felt himself get pulled back by the wrist.
Tsukishima gently kisses his cheek, smiles and lets him go.
Kei heads to class, looking back at a stunned, immobile Tobio.
He mouths ‘Get to class, King’ .
Blushing, Tobio pulls his hand down from his face.
He didn’t even notice that his hand automatically went to where Tsukishima kissed him.
He’s surprised that he didn’t hate the kiss.
As he thinks back on it, the butterflies come back.
Kageyama
What the hell?!?!?
Tobio wakes up in bed, heart pounding against his ribs.
'Why did I dream of that?!'
Not wanting to think about it, he turns over in bed, flips his pillow and tries to fall back to sleep.
It’s 10 pm and Kei isn’t asleep.
The night before an exam is one of the most important times to get sleep.
But here he was, not in his bedroom, but Kageyama’s.
He's been going over the same concepts in different ways but Kageyama was too tired to understand anything.
Tsukishima wants to give up, but he knows Kageyama would never.
Not passing meant not attending the volleyball camp.
Suddenly, Tobio sat up from where he was, face down on his desk.
He’d clearly fallen asleep.
Tsukishima
Maybe you should just go to bed.
Tsukishima said, gentler than he’d intended, but he was tired too.
As he gets up to leave, Kei feels a tug on his wrist and turns to see Kageyama’s hand wrapped around it.
Kei is about to say that he doesn’t really know another way to explain this stuff when Tobio speaks again.
Kageyama
I can’t do this on my own. Please, Tsukishima.
If anyone asked Kei, he’d deny that the pleading broke his heart a little bit.
He’d laugh and say he only helped because he didn’t want to see someone act so pathetic.
Either way, he sat back down.
Kageyama let go of him and they kept reviewing.
They quietly work on a math worksheet together.
More accurately, Kei works while Kageyama stares at his paper with enough heat in his gaze to burn a hole through it.
A few minutes passed before Kageyama declares that he needs a break.
Tobio’s hand accidentally brushes his tutor’s which was resting on the table.
Not wanting to create any more awkwardness between them, Tobio moves his hand away just enough that they aren’t touching.
He swears, they had enough distance between them.
But as he closed his eyes against the table, he felt Tsukishima’s hand on top of his.
Butterflies coming out again, Tobio flips his hand under Tsukishima’s so their palms are together and their fingers interlocked.
He squeezed Kei’s hand and almost sighs aloud when he felt a gentle squeeze back.
Eventually, he decides to try harder with his study.
Neither of them acknowledged their intertwined hands, but Tobio noticed the light blush on Tsukishima’s face.
He realized that his own face must be red too.
His grip on Tsukishima’s hand slips slightly as he sits up.
He can’t help but smile when he felt Kei pull his hand back and squeeze it.
Tobio squeezes back and notices a small smile on Tsukishima’s face too.
Practice goes by quickly and before Kei knows it, the third years are the only ones left in the gym to clean up.
Yamaguchi and Hinata are waiting for Kageyama and Tsukishima.
But before Kei can get to his friend, Kageyama stopped him.
Tobio waved at the other two, indicating that they should leave on their own.
Tsukishima expects Yamaguchi to ask why, but to his surprise, Tadashi practically dragged Hinata out of the gym with him.
Hinata protested, but agreed to come along when Yamaguchi offered to buy him a meat bun.
‘Weird,’ Kei thinks, but he shrugs it off.
By the time he turned back to Kageyama, the setter is grinning with a paper in his hand.
The red 90 on the paper seemed larger than his life.
Maybe because Tobio practically shoved it in Tsukishima’s face to show him.
He pushes the paper away gently, but Tsukishima is smiling as he says,
Tsukishima
Congrats, King.
The nickname 'King' used to get under Kageyama’s skin, but there was no more venom in Kei’s voice.
He wonders to himself when ‘King’ had gone from a jeer to an affectionate nickname.
Kageyama shakes his head 'no'.
Kageyama
You’re the king today, Tsukishima. I wouldn’t have even passed without you.
As they walked out of the gym, Tsukishima grabbed Kageyama’s hand, interlocking their fingers.
Tsukishima
Then your king wants to be pampered.
Kei smugly says amidst his blush.
If someone asks them why they're holding hands,
Kei would say that it's for the warmth.
Kageyama wouldn't even know what to say, he'd just stutter his way out.
Kageyama
You know, if anyone saw us like this, they might think we’re dating.
Kei’s eyes widened as he glanced at the smirking Tobio.
He used his free hand to adjust his glasses as he says,
Tsukishima
I wouldn’t mind if they did.
