Blooming Hydrangea
Life on the Beliar Aircraft hasn’t changed much since the Cancer Republic chose youthful girls to be shipped out of the solar system to fight wars in space. The girls are now teenagers, fully aware that they’ll never see their loved ones again. One of those pitiful girls is me, Hydrangea. I was given the name Hydrangea by my mother, who I have little reminisce over. My name is the only clue I have to my past, I don’t remember anything else. They wiped my memory clean upon my arrival on the Beliar. All the other girls that are in training and live here too have their memories wiped. We treat each other as sisters, a family in a way. Because of the failing society, the Beliar chooses only women to fight, as men are few.
It’s not all bad, this piece of metal is one of the only sustainable places left in the galaxy. Dorms are always clean and sanitized. Iris and I share dorm number 304.
“Hydrangea, get out of the dorm already! Roll call is about to start!” Iris said hurriedly.
“Alright, you go first. I’ll be there soon.” I replied nonchalantly.
“If you say so. Please don’t be late!” Iris said on her way out the door.
The thick silver hunk of metal came to a close with a satisfying whoosh.
I let out a sigh. I sometimes feel like a burden to Iris, who’s always the one reminding me of deadlines and making sure I don’t get into trouble. I snap out of my thoughts, and swiftly tie my shoelaces on my boots and put on my azure mesh coat. I’ll finally be early for roll call today, and that’s because I’ll be getting a promotion. I didn’t want to miss my name being called for something so special. Unlocking the door with my fingerprint on the scanner, I fasten my pace in the hallway on my way to a promotion. I’ve memorized these hallways clearly, so I walk through the halls in a trance, thinking about what promotion I’ll be getting. Mindlessly walking towards the main hall, I almost trip.
“Damn it, stop worrying so much. You’ll be fine. Let’s hurry in.” I said to myself.
I pulled open the silver doors and strode into the hall. Nearly everyone was already lined up for roll call. I quickly lined up with the other girls, I was ecstatic to find out what I’d be promoted to.
As the last of the girls lined up, we waited for our admiral and captains to arrive. After what felt like hours, slowly the captains trickled into the hall. First to arrive was Captain Aconite, then came Captain Aster, Captain Hepatica, Captain Lobelia, and finally, Captain Zinnia. Last of the women to enter was the general, Koki'o. With grace, she walked to the middle of the hall, center of the line of captains behind her.
“Girls! Today is of great importance for everyone of you, so please stay calm and collected. Each of you will be called on, so wait your turn,” General Koki'o started to say, then went on,
“You have all been diligently training all these years, I’m proud to see the vast improvement you’ve all shown these past months leading to our final decisions on each promotion. Sadly, some of you will not be satisfied with our decisions, and for those of you, take this failure as a chance to push foward. Now, I will begin to announce the promotions of each soldier.” General Koki'o finally said as a conclusion to her speech.
