Chapter 4

I go about my work the same as always.

Somehow the noise and the crowd in the bar makes me forget what happened.

It's in those quiet moments that I find myself staring into space.

That's why I prefer going to work.

Hopefully, that bastard won't have the gall to show his face here.

And right on time, guess who I see walking in?

Him!

I try to calm the rapid beating of my heart and bravely put on a smile on my face.

"Act casual! Treat him like any other customer who came here!" I admonish myself.

I approach him casually.

"Good evening, sir!" and put on my brightest smile as I casually walk past him.

I'm actually on my way to the kitchen to get some of the orders.

He seems confused by my greeting.

Maybe he thought I wouldn't talk to him after all that happened.

He put out a hand to stop me.

I calmly look at him and ask...

"Yes, sir? Anything I can do for you sir?".

There goes his confused look again.

"If you don't have anything else to say sir I have to go and get the customers' orders." I say still smiling at him.

"Damn it, Mary Dale! Stop calling me sir!" he says in frustration.

"I'm sorry sir but it would be very rude of me to call you anything but sir." I look at his hand on my arm as if willing him to let go of it.

He runs his hand through his hair in frustration.

He opens his mouth as if to speak but decided against it.

A woman suddenly approached him.

She links her arm with Edward's.

"Edward! Can we just go to another place? This place looks so cheap!" she says in disgust while looking at Mary Dale.

Mary Dale got irked by what she said.

"Cheap? Is she talking about the bar or me?" she thought to herself.

She's probably right!

Both the bar and me are cheap!

She feels that ache in her chest again.

"This place is not cheap Elizabeth!" Edward told the woman beside her.

"Ah... so she's the one he's going to marry! No wonder he couldn't wait to get rid of me! I mean, who wouldn't? Elizabeth is very beautiful and looks so expensive!"

"If there's nothing else sir I still have work to do!" she smiles and leave.

Edward no longer stops her.

He couldn't with Elizabeth by her side.

He would have wanted to talk to Mary Dale and explain.

"Explain what Edward?" he asked himself.

"That you love her and yet you are going to marry someone else?"

Jinnie spots Edward.

She saw him with another woman.

"Is she the reason why they broke up?" she asks herself.

She tries to approach him but Mary Dale stops her.

"Please don't! Whatever it is that you are planning to do, please don't!" Mary Dale begs her.

Jinnie looks at her.

"How can you still act so calm in this situation?" she asks incredulously.

Mary Dale shrugs her shoulders.

"No matter what I say or do, it doesn't change the fact that he and I are over." she says in a resigned voice.

She's tired.

She doesn't want to argue with Jinnie.

She puts a smile on her face.

Even though she feels an overwhelming ache in her chest.

She tries to calm her breath.

"I know you are not okay Mary Dale! You don't have to pretend with me! I'm your friend remember? I'm willing to help you!"

"And I'm thankful for you and Elisse! So stop worrying about me, okay? I'm fine! I really am!" she plasters a smile across her face.

Hopefully Jinnie drops the subject.

Jinnie stops herself from saying anything more.

She really has a bad feeling about the way Mary Dale is acting.

Yes!

Acting!

She knows it's all an act.

A normal person would have cried in her situation!

At least once!

But Mary Dale didn't cry.

And that's what worries her more.

Mary Dale turns to leave.

Jinnie is at a loss on how to help her friend.

She saw her enter the VIP room where she knows Edward and the woman were at.

"What the hell is she doing?" Jinnie asks angrily.

Mary Dale enters the VIP room.

She composes herself and once again puts on her brightest smile.

Edward looks shocked when he saw Mary Dale.

He wasn't expecting her to be the one to serve them.

"Good evening, sir, ma'am! May I take your orders?" she asks looking Edward straight in the eyes.

There's no use avoiding him.

She has to get used to this!

She has to!

He looks at her with so much longing in his eyes.

He misses her.

He looks at her without saying anything.

He was brought back to reality when Elizabeth spoke.

"Edward, are you going to tell her our orders or not?" she asks irritated.

She doesn't know why, but Elizabeth has this feeling that Edward knows this waitress.

Edward finally speaks.

"Just give us the usual!"

Mary Dale writes something on her notepad.

"Would that be all sir?"

He nods his head.

Mary Dale left with Edward still looking at her.

Elizabeth looks at Edward.

"Who is she?"
