They tried on dresses I was going to leave, but part of me wanted to stay and watch. Rose tried on a dress that I was sure any supernatural would eat her up. The red leather was stunning on her, but she looked up to no good. Mandy was more conservative, and I approved it was flattering without drawing too much attention to her.
When Kate stepped out of the dressing room, my heart stopped. She was graceful, and the dress suits her. It was perfect. She was perfect. She held herself like Charlotte only with more power behind her. Rose said something loudly, and Kate blushed to laugh at her friends. She was a queen among princesses.
It hurt to know that I would have to bring her into the fairy’s world so she could serve the queen. My heart ached as I watched her take in her brilliance, a part of me wanted to take her away and hide her forever, keep her smile on her face the soft one full of secrets.
They paid and left the mall I wished she had worn the dress out of the mall she was stunning in it. I froze as a woman approached her, Ember. She smiled wickedly and dropped and amulet before dashing into the bushes to conceal her. I held very still. What was she doing? It was a risk to come out into the open, let alone mark the healer with an amulet.
I dashed over to the bushes and found her snickering in the bush as Kate looked around for her holding the amulet in her hand.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing,” tone trilled on a joyful note.
“You could be killed by the enemy! You have no guards!”
“Relax, Rodrick, I’m safe you’re here,” she reached up and brushed a hand down my cheek before trailing down to my chest. I held still resisting the urge to pull away. She was my queen. She could use me as she saw fit and then throw me aside when she was bored. “Now, bring her to me, you have a month.”
I nodded that threat was valid, and as fairies, we never told a lie. Ember opened a door and once safe in her castle. I stepped out to watch Kate. She couldn’t see me as I was glamoured. It was hard to hide my fury that the queen didn’t trust that I would bring her in.
Kate looked around. Her eyes landed on me, and hers widened in surprise and fear. Mine, in shock, had the amulet opened her eyes to the supernatural realm. Ember had now marked her as a target one I now had to protect. I was a little excited that she could see me. I was now not a shadow watching her, protecting her. I could approach her now.
She looked away, which seemed effortless, I couldn’t stop watching her. She hurried to catch up with her friends, had she seen me? Running always made me feel better now I could run with a target in mind, Kate’s house.
They chatted happily over pizza. I would have to find out what school they went too, to watch Kate. Soon her friends left. I didn’t dare stand fully in the window encase that amulet had allowed her to see me. But I watched her from the
corners. Again she checked the house. She was a smart girl sensing something was watching her, ensuring she was safe. She dashed gracefully up the stairs as if she was dancing. I waited then floated up to her room. She had changed and was in bed, staring at the ceiling, she looked majestic. Hair billowed out around her in a fan. One leg crossed over the other in the air as she lounged on her bed.
She suddenly groaned and sat up in a swift movement but graceful like a princess. “Why me? Whoever he was, I don’t care,” she flopped back down, and as her head hit the pillow, she was out.
