Betrayal

I now have to attend Alex's funeral. I slowly walk to the burial with all the servants and nobles. It's a gloomy day. The bright sun is covered by the fluffy clouds. The clouds look gray like it is about to rain. In contrast of the weather, I'm in high spirits. Though I may not look like it. I have to put on this stupid facade. Honestly, I have to say my acting levels are top notch. I never knew I had a talent for this until now.

As I walked to the funeral ceremony in tears, everyone was looking at me with pity. I laugh inwardly, these people are really easy to fool. All the people of the kingdom mourn Alex's death.

I walk back now that the funeral is over. Now all that’s left is Maria. I walk to the investigation room. We all gather all the fake clues I left. It’s obvious who it is at this point. Red hair and blue eyes. The only person in the kingdom who has these features, Maria.

“I think we know who it is.” The guards say as they looked at each other.

“ No, it can’t be!” Sophie said while faking beingshocked.

“Your highness, it may be difficult for you to accept this but the assassin is Maria” The Captain said with a look as if he’s trying to console me.

“ We think she did it because she was jealous of you and your happiness” Thry say while looking at me pitifully.

“How could she?” Sophie said while sobbing.

“ I trusted her!” Sophie exclaimed.

“ Your highness the trail will be held tomorrow.” The captain confirmed.

“Ok, I’ll be their” Sophie said while half sobbing before she left.

I made my way to my office. I sit on the golden chair and glance at the paperwork I have to do . I think to myself this is a lot, and how long is it going to take to get finished. I hear a knock on the door. I make my way their to open it. There is see a man who looks increasingly similar to Alex. It is none other than the previous kings illegitimate son. The past king loved his wife very much and was of course loyal. Unfortunately, it was not always like that. He was a frivolous playboy in his young days. Which lead him to have several illegitimate children. The one we are looking at now is the oldest, Lucas. He is the only one I trust in this palace. We had grown up together. Since Alex was my fiancé, I visited the palace very often. There I met Lucas.

He has the same blue eyes as Alex, yet they were so different. His eyes held warmth and emotion. I would later find out that the certain emotion was hatred but, too bad it would be too late. I welcome him inside my office.

“Being me some tea and refreshments.” I say to my maid.

“How are you?” Lucas said pretending to be concerned.

“I’m fine” I said trying to act sad.

There was a long silence.

I started to feel unwell. I had no idea what was happening. I always had good health and was never a sickly child growing up. My stomach felt like there were a hundred needles stabbing me inside. The pain was horrible.

“ Thank you.” Lucas said with a mysterious grin.

“Why?” Sophie asked while bearing the scorching pain inside her stomach.

As far as I remembered I didn't do anything special for him.

“For killing Alex.” Lucas replied with a terrifying smile.

I was in shock. How did he know I killed Alex? And more importantly how does it even benefit him.

“Well since your dying I‘ll tell you everything, I already knew Alex was cheating on you. I was just waiting for the right moment so that you could kill him. Then, I could poison you and blame it on Maria, your little scapegoat.” Lucas explained carefully.

“ Now all that’s left is for you to die so I can have the throne. I asked one of your maids to put poison in your tea.” Lucas said.

“ Impossible, I didn’t smell any poison.” I stated shure of myself.

“ Your right, I didn’t order the maid to put the poison in the tea. I ordered her to put it in the sugar cubes. Then nobody would notice it.” Lucas said then giving off a criminal laugh.

I scold myself for being so foolish. I never thought that a Lucas would betray me. I close my eyes savoring the last seconds I have here.

Before I die I think to myself, I have so many things I have to do. I said to myself my hunger for revenge is still incomplete. It was not that I hadn’t completed my own revenge, it is that I wanted more. I just loved the thrill of seeing the shocked faces of people once they found out the innocent Sophie isn’t really innocent, but a cold blooded killer.
