Telling lies or even a white lies to someone just to make them happy is nothing. You're just creating a great irreparable damage to that person. We should always refrain from telling lies. Maybe, you can make them smile and protect their feelings for now , but did you think of how these lies will affect that person if the truth's revealed? Don't deceive them by imputing dishonesty if you want to make them happy because in the end, you'll hurt them or worst you'll destroy their trust.
Be open and tell them the truth even it might hurt them, just be honest because no matter what happens, the truth will always be revealed and when the time comes that all of your lies were exposed, you will hurt them even more.
The worst thing you can do to your loved ones is to lie. Don't be so selfish to tell them the truth 'cause they deserve to know it. Always put on your mind that having someone who's honest to you is priceless and remember that being honest leads to a fulfilling, free life. Honesty is not just about telling the truth. It's all about being true to yourself and the others about who you are, and it is what you need to live your most genuine life.
