Morning broke, once again, to the sound of Karan crying — loud, demanding, like an alarm that never forgot its schedule.
Karan woke first, searching for the one who made him feel safest.
Naya.
Not his daddy.
Never his daddy.
With one tiny hand, he tugged at the thin nightshirt of the girl still fast asleep at the edge of the bed.
Behind Naya, Arya had an arm locked around her waist — too tight for an employer holding his babysitter.
"Na . . . Na . . ." Karan whined, his little body wriggling toward her. But his face ran straight into Arya's hand, flung carelessly across the bed.
The baby erupted. He swatted at Arya's hand, shrieked, then cried louder still, as if to wake the entire floor of the mansion.
The wailing jolted Naya awake. Her breath came short, panic firing on pure babysitter reflex.
"Mr. Maheswara!" She quickly knocked the big hand away from Karan's face.
Arya grunted, but didn't let go of her waist. If anything, he pulled her closer, refusing to let her get up and go to his own son.
"Why does he have to wake up now . . ." Arya muttered, his voice heavy and dark.
Naya moved to rise, but he dragged her back. "Later, Naya. This early, I—"
"Sir, I have to nurse Baby Karan." Naya's tone was tired. Not angry — just wrung out.
The words that stung Arya most.
He finally opened his eyes. His gaze was dark, sharp, but also . . . sulky.
"It's always the same," he said flatly. "Nursing that little gremlin, then ignoring my share."
Naya held her breath.
Arya . . . was in full greedy-baby mode.
Karan whined again, louder, as if accusing Naya of abandoning him.
She scooped him up quickly and settled him to nurse, the way she always did.
The instant he was lifted, the baby went silent — and even fixed Arya with a round-eyed stare full of . . . triumph. His lips latched onto Naya at once.
Arya narrowed his eyes.
A grown man, locked in a standoff with a baby a little over a year old.
"Why is that gremlin always like this?" Arya sneered. "Look at that smug little face."
