The bell above the café door chimed, its sound delicate against the low hum of chatter. Taehyung stepped inside, his pulse hammering in his ears. The warm blend of roasted coffee and vanilla should have calmed him, but it only made the tightness in his chest sharper.
By the window, Jimin sat with his arms folded, one finger tapping a slow, irritated rhythm against his coffee mug. His posture screamed annoyance, but his eyes—those sharp, restless eyes—held something deeper.

Taehyung froze for a moment. A year had passed, yet Jimin hadn’t changed. He was still sunlight disguised as fire.
Swallowing hard, Taehyung forced his feet forward. His knees felt weak, but he managed to slide into the chair across from him.
Jimin didn’t speak at first. He just looked at Taehyung, gaze steady, unreadable. Then his lips parted

"You actually showed up," he said at last, voice cool, but not without a flicker of relief beneath it.

"I did," Taehyung murmured, fingers twisting the edge of his sleeve. He didn’t know where to rest his hands, so he let them clutch the fabric as if it might anchor him.
The silence between them stretched—thick, heavy, almost suffocating.

Jimin leaned forward, breaking it with a question that sliced straight through the air. "Why now? Why after a year of silence?

Do you have any idea how many nights I wondered if I even had a best friend anymore?"
Each word hit Taehyung like a whip. His throat tightened, guilt crawling up his skin.

"I know," he whispered. "I don’t expect you to forgive me. I don’t even forgive myself. But Jimin…"

He lifted his eyes, glassy with unshed tears. His voice trembled, but the words were carved from something solid inside him. "I want to leave Jungkook."
The café noise seemed to dull, as though the world itself had paused.

Jimin blinked, his jaw slackening. "What?" His laugh was sharp, disbelieving.

"You? The same Taehyung who used to look at him like he hung the moon? Don’t play with me."

"I’m not playing," Taehyung said firmly, though his voice cracked on the last word.

"For a year I’ve been married to him. And in that year… not once has he looked at me. Not once has he asked me if I was okay, if I was alive. To him, I’m nothing but air. He’s cold, selfish—he doesn’t care about me, not even his parents."
His breath hitched, but he pushed the words out anyway, like tearing glass from his throat.

"I used to believe mates were fate. But with him… it feels like fate chose me only to watch me rot."
