In his mind, fragments of his former life resurfaced—skills, instincts, old contacts. He knew how to vanish, how to hide, how to prepare for threats no ordinary parent would ever imagine. And now, all of it was for this child, this small, abandoned life that somehow demanded he care, even as grief still clung to his bones.
Somewhere in the city, shadows were already moving. Whoever had left this boy, whoever had abandoned him, would not forget so easily. But he would be ready.
For the first time since his wife’s decline, he felt the pulse of purpose return. The boy’s soft whimpers, the fragile grip of tiny hands—these were enough to tether him to life again.
And in the sterile glow of the hospital’s night wing, a man hardened by loss made a silent promise:
