I Tried To Run Away, But The Protagonist Is Just Too Formidable
The beginning was always the same pattern.
Han-Seo seemed to be always just out of reach, dodging around every corner, while the enraged debt collectors were taking their frustrations out on innocent townsfolk.
‘It seems like there’s no escaping here either.’
“Hey, fatty! Didn’t you come to catch me? Why are you bothering random people instead? Are you already tired?”
“Damn you! Aren’t you coming over here?!!”
Han-Seo taunted them by sticking out his tongue before quickly fleeing into an alleyway.
Soon, four or five strong men scattered through various alleyways in pursuit, but it was not enough to catch Han-Seo, who had already hidden himself nimbly.
‘Old guys with diminishing learning abilities. Why would I pick such places to hide if they were easy?’
It had already been five years since Han-Seo had been chased by debt collectors.
Once, he had been adopted at the youngest age due to his noticeable appearance, becoming an object of envy. However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, his adoptive parents had adopted him only for the subsidies and had abandoned him. They had fled after leaving him burdened with debt, even after he became an adult.
In the past, Han-Seo had once believed that the parents who had adopted him would come back to find him. But as time passed and only debt collectors came, he realized that he would live his life solely for his own happiness.
Of course, choosing to live on the run was not due to external factors but his own decision. Han-seo, despite his lack of education, understood that the debt he owed was not an amount an ordinary person could repay. So he traveled from place to place, living contentedly with the fugitive life he had chosen.
“Do you think I’m going to be easily caught?”
Han-seo emerged from a narrow opening under a wall he had previously scouted and dusted off the dirt from his clothes. And then—
“Ahhh!”
At the sudden scream, Han-seo turned his head to see a car swerving toward him in the direction where he was standing.
“Shit.”
The erratically swerving car gave no chance to avoid it.
With a deafening noise, Han-seo’s body was lifted and then rolled onto the cold asphalt.
“Please call 119 here! Student, don’t lose consciousness!”
‘Ah, I’m dying.’
Han-seo instinctively foresaw his death.
Even though red blood seeped between the cracks in the asphalt before his eyes, he felt strangely no pain.
It might have been a good thing. After all, isn’t there nothing more luxurious than dying comfortably?
Moreover, Han-seo thought he had lived this life longer than he had expected.
“Cough.”
Just one cough, and something came gushing out of Han-seo’s mouth. Even through his blurry vision, the red stains were particularly clear. Thus, Han-seo slowly lost consciousness, with the last thing he saw being the red-tinted view.
—
“Yoo…Patient Yoo.”
“….”
“Patient Yoo In-ha, are you coming to?”
“…?”
Han-seo, who had been tossing and turning at the murmuring sounds in his ears, slowly opened his eyes to the gradually clearer voice.
Through the blurred focus, he saw a white ceiling and recognized the shape of a person beside him, but his whole body felt too heavy to move even a finger.
“B-Body. Can’t. Move.”
“You don’t need to strain yourself. You’re experiencing heat symptoms due to your transition to Omega, but once your pheromones stabilize, you’ll be fine soon.”
“O-Omega…? Wh-what is that…”
Han-seo asked urgently, unable to believe what he had heard.
“Patient, you’ve transitioned into an Omega. O. Me. Ga.”
Thinking that Han-seo might not have heard correctly, the kind nurse repeated the fact that Han-seo had transitioned into an Omega several times.
“Yes…? Omega?”
The sensation of his body being heavy and the slurred speech seemed to be a result of the aftermath of the traffic accident. However, the unexpected answer of ‘transition’ was completely different from what Han-seo had anticipated.
Having never heard the term ‘transition’ before, Han-seo lay there for a while, stunned, trying to grasp the situation he was facing.
‘Omega? What is this situation?’
As his hazy mind cleared, Han-seo found it even harder to believe this situation. He slapped his cheeks hard a few times, feeling the heat rising, but it was reality.
So, if this situation wasn’t a dream, then Han-seo had become an Omega in the world of Omegaverse, a setting he had seen in web novels. The fictional world had become reality, which was naturally hard to accept.
[Guide to Transitioning Individuals]
In his frustration, Han-seo discovered a pamphlet hanging on the railing and began to read it slowly.
“During the heat period, pheromones that attract others are released, and a liquid from the genitals…”
After reading the entire pamphlet, Han-seo, with a sense of dread, pulled down his pants. Sure enough, his underwear was already damp, and he realized that the strange scent filling the hospital room was his own pheromones.
“Wow… How can this be real?”
Han-seo had once read a web novel based on the ‘Omega Bus’ theme.
While killing time in a gay bar he had entered to evade debt collectors, he had heard someone wish that it would be nice if Omega or Alpha were recognized in same-sex relationships.
Omega and Alpha. His curiosity about these unfamiliar terms led him to the Omegaverse novel. Back then, he had chosen a top-rated novel based solely on the Omegaverse keyword and became engrossed in the intriguing content.
However, as the story progressed, Han-seo felt uncomfortable with the high level of obsession the ‘main character’ had towards the ‘love interest’ and realized late that the key themes were obsession and despair, leading him to abandon the novel.
That was how Han-seo’s first and last experience with novels ended.
“Wait a minute. Didn’t they call me ‘Yoo In-ha’ earlier…?”
Why was it, then, that the not-so-pleasant content of the novel came rushing back into Han-seo’s mind at this moment?
“Ah, no way.”
Omega transition and Yoo In-ha.
Even as Han-seo tried to calm his mind, he couldn’t shake the sense of dread. He slowly turned his head to confirm.
[Yoo In-ha/Type: Recessive Omega/Age: 24]
“Ah… I’m screwed.”
It seemed that this absurd assumption had become Han-seo’s reality.
* * *
“Just come back in a week to get another pheromone test.”
“Alright, thank you.”
After confirming that he had possessed the protagonist from the despair genre novel, Han-seo judged that his next priority was to figure out at which point in the story he had entered.
‘Please remember, Yoo Han-seo.’
Han-seo squeezed his eyes shut and began to search through his memories. Since he didn’t know the ending, he had to remember as many details as possible up to the part he had read.
“The transition, trait training… The early parts are definitely clear.”
Fortunately, Han-seo had been deeply immersed in the beginning of the novel. He recalled that in the original story, the setting of the trait center was a university hospital near the neighborhood where Han-seo originally lived, and the protagonist, Yoo In-ha, after transitioning into a recessive Omega and completing trait training, could only return home. Just like Han-seo now.
In that case? It meant that it was still the early part of the novel. That is, Han-seo had not yet encountered the ‘obsessive main character’ from the original story. Relieved that he wasn’t in the worst possible situation, Han-seo thought about his body that had closed its eyes after the car accident.
“I must be dead, right?”
Han-seo, who hadn’t been very attached to his previous life, accepted his death quite calmly. After all, he had no family, friends, and was burdened with debt. The situation of possession that came at the end of his death wasn’t too bad.
Of course, it was true that he was quite flustered by having his consciousness transferred to someone else’s body and being placed in a fictional world he had only seen in text. But if he couldn’t even confirm whether the body he had been living in was dead or alive, adapting to this new life didn’t seem too bad.
“Guess there are times to be grateful for the writer’s simplicity.”
This world only added the Omegaverse to the existing one, with no significant differences. It seemed that the writer of the original work was too lazy to set up a new world and had kept the setting the same as the real world.
Not only that, but the original protagonist’s residence was also near the boarding house where Han-seo had lived. With a lighter heart, Han-seo stepped forward with a sense of relief.
“The location is perfect.”
Upon arriving at the address listed on the ID, Han-seo placed the trait kit he had been holding in both hands on the floor and carefully turned the key to open the door.
“Wow.”
As soon as the door opened, Han-seo let out an exclamation of awe.
From the plush bed he had briefly used when he was adopted to the personal desk. There was even an air conditioner he had never dreamed of having. For Han-seo, who had always lived accustomed to the cold and heat, it was like a slice of paradise.
As Han-seo explored and touched each piece of furniture in the room, he couldn’t help but smile.
“Oh, right. Cleaning up! I need to start by organizing.”
Suddenly spotting a notebook on the desk, Han-seo stopped his actions and ran over to the desk, pulling out a pen.
Since it was real that he had possessed the protagonist of the novel, he had to recall and document as much of the original story’s content as possible. Given the novel’s main keyword was despair, this was an important task that could affect his future. At least if he didn’t want to follow the same path as the original protagonist.
[Yoo Han-seo/Yoo In-ha]
Han-seo started to list the key events from the novel in chronological order at the top of the notebook, separating his name from the protagonist’s.
“This is too easy.”
After filling an entire page with text and placing the pen down with a sound on the desk, Han-seo shrugged his shoulders.
“Since it’s clearly the early part of the novel, I just need to run away before the main episode starts, right?”
Pressing down on the name of the obsessive character, which had been circled multiple times in the notebook, with his thumb, Han-seo muttered,
“No matter how handsome he is, obsessives are not my type.”
He erased the name so thoroughly that it was no longer visible.
