Chapter 2

He forced his eyes to the line of slaves kneeling before the throne.
Their heads were bowed.
Their clothes were rags.
Some trembled, others stared blankly at the floor.
The prince thought quickly.
If he must choose, he would choose someone harmless.
A woman, perhaps.
Someone who could do small things—
Carry his books, tend to his chambers.
Someone who might suffer the least under his “ownership.”
But then…
His eyes caught on him.
A man.
Tall.
Handsome.
His frame still strong despite the hunger etched into his bones.
His skin carried the map of cruelty—
Cuts, bruises, scars both fresh and old.
His clothes were torn to shreds, soaked with dirt and dried blood.
He looked nothing like a slave.
His back was too straight.
His eyes—
Though half-shadowed—held a fire that refused to die.
For a moment, Lysander’s breath caught.
This man didn’t belong in chains.
He looked like a fallen warrior.
A predator forced into a cage.
And that was when Lysander understood.
If this man had been brought here in such a state…
He had offended the king.
