New Home

...***...

The car stops at a side garage and I get out. I look around the new environment filled with nature, quiet and birds. I walk out of the garage and stop on the pavements taking in the fresh air.

" It's beautiful here, Oliver. You had it built in a good position." I compliment heartily. He smiles brightly.

" Thanks. Want to come in?" he asks invitingly,,, and I nod. " Okay. Follow me, then." We walk ahead of me and I follow him to his house. He unlocks the door and usher me in first. He turns the lights on and heads further inside the house while I explore. It's even more than what I expected. The lighting illuminated in each section of the room portrays picture frames and chandelier. It's impressive indeed. I walk into the hallway and notice picture frames plastered at the walls. I look at them but one catches my attention. A middle-aged kid stands in victory from a fencing competition.

" I see you like this one?" his voice startles me. I'm seconds away from yelping out of fear. I fully turn to him. " Did I startle you?"

" Nope. You, did not." I say too embarrassed to say the least. Silence, then I speak up relieving the tension. " So...you were a fencer?"

" Yeah, at middle school. It was a long time ago before -" he hesitates

" Before, what?" I urge and he moves into the living room and takes a seat into a single-seater sofa. I stand opposite to him.

" Before my parents passing." his voice gentler than when I met him. I feel a sudden pang in my chest.

" I'm so sorry to hear that, I-"

" It's okay. It's been a long time anyway."

I take a seat in the sofa opposite to him and lean forward. " So that means we're in the same boat?" I say trying to lighten up the mood. He gives a faint smile. It really didn't work.

" They always supported me with everything I did, every damn decision and their deaths made me give up the one thing I become food at because of them."

I take in his words. It weighs down on me like I was the cause of their deaths. " Does that mean you don't anymore?"

He nods. " I stopped and found another interest. And that is being a detective. Helping others to the truth that I couldn't find myself-" he stops mid-sentence and place his hand over mine, covering its tiny frame. His eyes bore into mine and sparkled with sincerity and truth. This surprises me. " That's why I want to help you. Find your parent's murderer and give you and your family the justice they deserve."

I nod acknowledging his firm words. " Thank you, Oliver." I say with a warm smile strained from my stressed out face and swollen eyes from all the crying.

" It's my job to do so. Come, I'll show you to your room" He stands up and walk across the living room to the flight of stairs leading up. I follow him. More photos are hanging on the walls of the hallway. He pushed open a pink painted door and turns to me." Here it is"

I glide over, and my eyes widen from the well decorated room. It's spacious, cozy and beautiful. I excitedly hop on the bed. Ut feels like I'm going to get better sleep these days.

" You've got great taste. Is this where your ex-girlfriend used to live?" That's the first question that popped in my head. I made him laugh heartily. He leans attractively against the door frame and folds his arms.

" Why would you ask that?" he asks somehow embarrassed. I just shrug and stand up from the bed.

" Because the coloring is pink. Sure enough anyone would think the same thing as me".

" Sure. It is true. My ex was fond of pink, and I'm sure you're a fan of it too."

" What happened between you two?"

He goes silent for a moment. " I guess my devotion to work kept my attention to it than to her. So she felt neglected, cheated right her on this bed and that's it. I guess it was my fault we drifted apart"

* Perfect timing for a devastating conversation, Desiré* I say to myself and shake my head to my foolishness. " You had a lot going on. It wasn't your fault."

" I wished I could tell myself that for the passed four years. But hey...the investigation is ongoing, we're going back to the crime scene soon. But the forensic department are out already."

I nod at his report. " Thanks for telling me that. An agreement is an agreement." He says and turns to leave. " There are clothes in the closet. Scatter to see what fits okay?"

" Thanks" He turns around and finally leaves.
