Days passed, and now Aahana was ten and Riya was five. At first, Aahana had tried to love her little cousin, hoping that Riya would reciprocate. But over the years, it became painfully clear: Riya was just like her mother—greedy, jealous, and cruel at heart.
Whenever the children played together, Riya found ways to push Aahana down, snatch her toys, and humiliate her in front of others.

(Snatching a doll) Mine! You’re always getting better things, Aahana!

(Pulling it back gently) Riya… that’s not fair. We can play together.
Riya malhotra
Riya malhotra
(Scowling, pushing her) No! I don’t want to share! You always get everything!
It wasn’t just the toys. Riya would constantly try to steal Aahana’s attention from adults, brag about small things, and make Aahana feel small—even when she did nothing wrong.
Priya, watching silently, often sighed and pulled Aahana aside.

(Softly) Beta… don’t let her jealousy hurt you. Riya is just… not a kind child. You are better than her, always remember that.

But Mamma… why is she always so mean?

(Hugging her) Some people are like that, beta. But you don’t have to be like them. You stay kind, you stay good… that’s what matters.
Even her grandparents noticed Riya’s clever ways to make Aahana feel small, yet instead of correcting her, they would often laugh or praise Riya, reinforcing her jealousy and cruelty. Aahana, despite being smart, talented, and kind, felt the heavy weight of growing up in a house where love was measured by favoritism, and where Riya’s envy shadowed every corner of her childhood. As the days went by, Aahana learned to smile outwardly, hide her hurt, and quietly protect her heart—because in her family, love was not something given equally, it was something she had to fight for silently.

Aahana returned to the city, the air thick with exam stress. It was finals week, and she sat nervously at her desk, scribbling on her papers. Behind her, a boy named Nathan tapped his pen lightly, grinning at her over his shoulder. Both of them had transferred to the school at the same time, but unlike Aahana, Nathan was a studious, top-of-the-class kind of guy. Aahana bit her lip, glancing at his paper.

(Whispering frantically) Shh… Nathan… can you please tell me the answer to this question?
Nathan Sharma

(Leaning back, smirking) No. Turn around.
Aahana malhotra
Aahana malhotra
(Pleading, rolling her eyes) Please… just one question. I don’t understand it. One question. And cherry on top—it’s maths. Ugh, I hate it!
Nathan shook his head, hiding a laugh. Before he could reply, the teacher’s sharp voice cut through the whispers.
Teacher: Hey! Both of you… stand up! What are you two doing? Aahana froze, then tried to explain.
Aahana malhotra
Aahana malhotra
I… I couldn’t understand one question… so…
Teacher: pointing at Nathan I’m the teacher here, not him! Exams are to test your knowledge, not your neighbor’s. Sit down and answer your own questions! Nathan snickered quietly, but Aahana rolled her eyes at him, muttering under her breath.
Aahana malhotra
Aahana malhotra
(Grumbling) One day, I’m going to get him back for this…
She turned back to her paper, determined to pass, even if maths hated her as much as she hated it.
