Chapter 4

'Late? For what?' he asked?

Oh! No! here we go again I thought ' Late for the meeting with uncle Ronald. I had reminded you of this yesterday morning. This is why I tell you to keep a calendar and write down your appointments and read through it before bed the previous day.' I scolded him.

Ryan is the son of the previous Beta and so he inherited the position from his dad a year back. His father served as Beta while my father was Alpha. And after my father's death the Alpha position was handed down to me while Ryan's dad continued in his position. He advised me on running the pack and became more like a second father to me. 

A year back he decided to resign and hand over his position to his son. Even though I was against it, he said that he wanted to spend the rest of his life being with his children and grandchildren. After hearing that I couldn't stop him. 

Even though I knew Ryan was not ready to be a Beta, I decided to give him a chance and slowly train him to be worthy of his position. At least that much, I owe to his father. The man had spent most of his life serving the pack and on top of that, became a second father to me. I know my needs and responsibilities had kept him away from his family and he couldn't be there for them as much as he wanted to. 

The pack's position inheritance laws have changed over the years. Long back the alpha and beta position was never certain and could be challenged by anyone. Winning a challenge means retaining the position while losing means death or exile. An Alpha used to get challenged quite often and it used to be a bloodbath. 

So some high ranking Alphas decided to put an end to it and drew up the  inheritance laws. Now being Alpha means royalty. The position is inherited by the first born male.

Uncle Ronald was a very close friend of my father. And after his death he had helped me in some crisis. I was a little child who had just lost both his parents and a huge responsibility on my shoulders. Those times he used to say you are the Alpha of your pack, but remember that you are a child. Don't just live to fulfill the expectations, do things you like too. 

Today he was facing some issues in his pack borders and wanted some help. So we had arranged to meet in a university library.

When we reached the university, Ryan dropped me in front of the library and said ' you go ahead. He must be waiting for you. I will park the car and grab something to eat before I join you. Do you want me to get you anything?.' 

I replied ' a coffee'

'Alright' he said and drove off.

I walked in and uncle Ronald was easily spotted. He was wearing a brown suit with a white shirt. Time has really taken a toll on this man I thought as I walked closer to him. His hair was now almost all grey, his face showed the signs of ageing.

As soon as he saw me he stood up and hugged me saying ' My boy, how are you doing?'. I replied 'good'. Then we spoke for a while catching up on the old times. And finally I asked him about the problems in his pack.

He said 'there are no problems internally but borders were attacked a few times. Each time it was a different species; first it was done by strays, then vampires and then orcs. Some say it was just a coincidence but….'

'but you think otherwise' I completed his sentence before asking 'May I ask what made you suspect that?'

'I know my pack borders. We were attacked at the weakest border which not many people would think of because that was not a border common with any species and every time we were attacked on guard change day.

'That's too much of a coincidence. 'I said

'Well uncle don't worry, I will enquire about it to see if any other packs have had similar experiences.

We then continued chatting for some more time before he left. 

I thought of leaving since Ryan hadn't shown up yet, and that's when I saw her, my mate. 

She was standing between two shelves and leaning on the left one engrossed in a book. I walked up to her and asked, Mate?'
