Episode # 5
Leila walked up the small stone steps to her aunt's place.
The cozy apartment sat just near the edge of forest, it's windows half covered with vines and flowers.
She opened the gate and called out cheerfully.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
Hey, Aunt Nira! I'm back!
The door opened right away, and Aunt Nira stepped out, arms wide.
Nira Morvanti ( FL's aunt/ Arin's mom)
There you are! Back and all grown into a beautiful young lady. Wow...
They hugged tightly, rocking side to side.
Leila smiled against her shoulder.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
It's so good to see you again.
Nira Morvanti ( FL's aunt/ Arin's mom)
Come in, come in.
Her aunt, said guiding her inside.
Nira Morvanti ( FL's aunt/ Arin's mom)
The place hasn't changed much, but you might find the cookies a little better.
Inside the air was warm and full of life. There were old paintings, soft cushions, and a table full of tea and snacks.
Just then, a voice called from the kitchen.
Arin Morvanti ( FL's cousin/ Nira's son)
Hey, Leila! Good to see you back.
It was her cousin, holding a tea mug.
Leila grinned and gave a him a hug too.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
You've gotten taller.
Arin Morvanti ( FL's cousin/ Nira's son)
And you've gotten more royal.
They all laughed and sat around the table. Her aunt poured tea while Arin passed her a plate of cookies.
As they chatted about little things, Leila's eyes drifted toward the window.
The forest beyond looked quiet...too quiet. And the old road leading into it seemed darker than she remembered.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
Hey... doesn't anyone use that road anymore?
Arin stopped mid-bite and looked at her.
Arin Morvanti ( FL's cousin/ Nira's son)
No. Not really.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
Why not?
Arin Morvanti ( FL's cousin/ Nira's son)
People say it's haunted. Strange noises. Lights. Sometimes folks go in and don't come back the same.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
Oh, come on. Another ghost story to scare people?
Aunt Nira suddenly stood up and went to the kitchen.
Nira Morvanti ( FL's aunt/ Arin's mom)
Anyone want more tea?
Leila watched her go, then glanced back at Arin.
Leila Morvanti (FL)
Did I say something wrong?
Arin shook his head slowly.
Arin Morvanti ( FL's cousin/ Nira's son)
No. But...I people around here don't like to talk about that road.
Leila looked out the window again, thoughtful.
Something about it felt... connected.
And it gave her a chill she couldn't explain.
