An improper Goodbye
Lucy and Sarah are Childhood Friends. They are always together. While Sarah is much of an outgoing businesswoman, Lucy on the other hand have a shy, introvert personality. This is the conversation of them when Lucy visits a cafe on beach and texted Sarah.
Lucy
G'day! How ya going? I'm just hanging out at this local cafe in Bondi Beach. The weather's absolutely ripper today perfect for a flat white and some brekkie.
Want to join me?
Sarah
Yeah, you bet. Just text me the address and I'll be there asap. 😼
Lucy
Beauty! I'm at The Coastal Brew, right across from the beach you can't miss it, mate. Got the perfect spot on the deck too. Should I order you a coffee while you're on your way? They do a mean flat white here, or if you're feeling adventurous, their golden latte is pretty ace!
Sarah
Golden Latte sounds Perfect Lucy. See you soon.
xoxo
Lucy
No worries, Sarah! I'll get that golden latte started for ya. And heads up they've got some wicked avo toast today with feta and chili flakes. sends quick text with exact location pin
30 minutes later
Hey! Over here! waves from the deck Your golden latte's still nice and hot. You made good time - traffic wasn't too mental on the way over?
Sarah
Yeah! They look delicious 😋. Traffic is just fine. You tell me, how're you doin' and how did you find this place. (taking sip from her latte)
Lucy
Taking a sip of coffee
Oh mate, you wouldn't believe it! I stumbled across this gem last weekend when I was out for a morning jog. Was absolutely knackered and desperately needed a caffeine fix. The barista, Jake super friendly bloke recommended their special blend, and I've been hooked ever since!
Gestures at the ocean view
Lucy
And just look at this view! Beats those crowded cafes in the CBD, doesn't it? Been meaning to bring you here 'cause I know you're always on the hunt for new coffee spots. How's that golden latte treating you? Jake adds a special blend of turmeric and honey that makes it proper special.
Sarah
Yeah, it does taste pretty great, just like its name. ☕
Well, you tell me, it seems like someone is crushing over someone. (mischievous grin)
Lucy
Nearly chokes on coffee and turns slightly red
Oi, shut up! laughs nervously I just appreciate good coffee, that's all! Though... glances quickly at Jake behind the counter he does make a mean flat white... and yeah, maybe he's got a nice smile... BUT that's not why I brought you here!
tries to change the subject
So anyway, what's new with you? Haven't caught up properly since that crazy work party last month. How's the new project going?
Jake
walks by to clear some tables and waves...
Lucy
Whispers after he passes
Oh god, stop grinning like that, you're making it obvious! 😳
Sarah
Well, it's been quite a while I have seen you interested over something.
Sighs...
I already proposed to you as well but you denied it, and it still hurts you know. (faking sad face)
Lucy
Bursts out laughing and playfully throws a napkin
Oh, rack off! That proposal was you getting down on one knee in the Woolies frozen food section asking if I'd share a family-size pizza with you! Hardly counts as romantic, you drongo!
Takes another sip of coffee
Lucy
But speaking of interests... glances at Jake again I dunno, maybe I should just ask him out for a coffee? Which would be ironic since he literally makes coffee all day... Oh crikey, that would be a terrible opening line, wouldn't it?
buries face in hands 😣
Why am I so bad at this? Help a mate out here!
Sarah
Well, what do you say, if I ask you in all seriousness now, would you say yes? (bends down on a knee) With a paper ring in right hand, (magically appears/created via the thrown napkin). Just say "Yes", m'lady Lucy and I'm all yours.
Lucy
Looks completely shocked and flustered, glancing between Sarah and Jake, who's now watching the scene unfold along with other cafe patrons
Sarah! What are you... face turning bright red Get up, you galah! Everyone's staring!
Tries to pull her back into her seat but can't help laughing
Lucy
You're absolutely bonkers, you know that?
First Woolies, now this... I swear, if this is another one of your-
Jake
Walking over with an amused smile.. (approaching footsteps sounds)
Lucy
Oh no, oh no, oh no... mutters under breath I'm going to kill you later!
Jake
"Everything alright here, ladies?"
Lucy
looks like she wants to disappear into her Golden Latte
Sarah
(confident tone) : Yeah, just get rejected twice, no worries though, someone got a crush on you.
Would you mind sitting here for some time to lighten up the tension.
Takes her coat and leaves for a walk on beach. (An innocent smile towards Lucy) and then walks towards the beach. (awkward silence for a minute) and Leaves, footstep sounds getting lower.
Lucy
Watches Sarah walk away with a mix of guilt and amusement
Jake
So... That was quite a show. Friend of yours?
Lucy
Still flustered "Yeah, she's my best mate... always pulling stunts like this.
She's... she's actually trying to help, in her own weird way."
Lucy
"Sarah, wait! Don't you dare leave me like this!"
Turns to Jake
"I, uh... rain check on that conversation?
I need to go knock some sense into my friend."
Grabs bag and starts running toward the beach
Lucy
"SARAH! You better not be posting this on Instagram! And you still need to pay for your golden latte, you dramatic galah!"
Chasing after Sarah on the beach.
Though noticed that Sara had already left. mixed of confusion and guilt, tries to text but the phone does not have a network for more than an hour or so
Lucy, now worried pacing onthe beach
Lucy
Muttering to herself "Crikey, I really messed up... She may be a goofball, but she's my best mate..."
Checks phone again anxiously
Jake
Everything okay? Your friend left this. . .
Hands over the wallet that fell out while making the framatic exit
Lucy groans
Lucy
"Of course she did... Now she's out there somewhere without her wallet or phone signal... This is such a Sarah thing to do."
Looks at Jake apologetically
Lucy
"I'm really sorry, but I've got to go find her. She always heads to the lighthouse when she's upset... I'l1... um... maybe see you around?"
Starts gathering things quickly
Jake
Wait! Here's my number. . . You know, in case you need help finding her. . . Or. . . Whatever. . .
Lucy blushes &, quickly saves the number
Lucy
"Thanks... I better go before she does something else dramatic... like try to become a mermaid or something..."
Heads off toward the lighthouse, both worried and smiling slightly at Sarah's typical Sarah-style dramatics
At the lighthouse, about an hour later
Lucy spots Sarah sitting on a bench, looking out at the waves
Approaches cautiously, holding Sarah's wallet and two takeaway cups
Lucy
"Oi, you dramatic dropkick... I brought peace offerings a fresh golden latte and your wallet that you managed to lose during your Oscar-worthy exit."
Sits next to her, and gives her coffee to her
Lucy
"Look, I'm sorry if I made you feel bad back there. You know you're my best mate, right? Been through thick and thin since primary school... can't get rid of me that easily."
Lucy
"Though I have to admit... small smile your little stunt did get Jake to give me his number. Not that you deserve to know that after giving me a heart attack..."
Bumps Sarah's shoulder playfully
Lucy
"So... are we good, or do I need to get down on one knee with a TimTam ring this time?"
Sarah
(softened smile🙂) It's okay bud, I'm happy for you. It's been quite a while since I've seen you this flustered.
Thanks for the wallet. I appreciate you sharing that place with me....
Both appreciating the Sunset view. Only the sound of sipping coffee is there.
Sarah
Oh, right! I have an early flight tomorrow so, I need to leave now. Sorry for the trouble I have caused you.
(though both are having very loud thoughts)
(Sarah leaves and her shadow fades away slowly, while Lucy watches her shadow fade away against the sunset, feeling a mix of emotions)
Lucy
Whispers to herself "Early flight? What early flight?"
Quickly pulls out phone to check messages from past weeks no mention of any trips Suddenly remembers something and her eyes widen
Lucy
"Sarah... Sarah, wait!"
Runs after Sarah but she's already gone.
Standing alone now, remembering how she's been dropping subtle hints about moving overseas for that job offer that she mentioned months ago, but she was too caught up in her own life to really notice.
Lucy
But isn't she avoiding it for quite a while now. What has changed now...
Lucy
Pulls out phone, types message
"You better not be leaving the country without a proper goodbye, you galah. And you still owe me for that golden latte... and about 15 years of putting up with your dramatic exits. Call me when you land, wherever you're going.
Love you, mate.♡"
Stays at the lighthouse a bit longer, watching the last rays of sunset fade, holding two coffee cups - one still full and getting cold.
