Chapter 5: Secrets, Sparks, and Shadows

Luna didn’t sleep that night.

Killian’s voice kept echoing in her head — “No feelings.” But his eyes… they told a different story.

She kept trying to remind herself that this was just a job. A temporary one. Nothing more.

But every time she saw him, it became harder to believe that.

---

The next morning, she entered the office with a smile pasted on her face, trying to stay professional. She kept her head high as she passed coworkers who still stared and whispered.

“Still standing,” she muttered to herself.

At her desk, she found two messages. One from Killian, reminding her of a private investor meeting at 3 p.m. The second was unsigned but chilling:

“You don’t belong here. Leave before it’s too late.”

Luna’s fingers froze. The note wasn’t typed. It was handwritten — shaky and rushed. She looked around. No one seemed to be paying attention, but her heart began to race.

Was it a prank? Or a threat?

She slipped the note into her bag and forced herself to keep working.

---

At noon, Killian called her into his office.

“Lunch,” he said simply, handing her a takeout bag.

“You bought me lunch?” she asked, surprised.

“You skipped it yesterday. You work better when you’re fed.”

Luna tried not to smile. “And here I thought you didn’t care.”

“I don’t,” he said flatly. But there was a glint in his eyes again.

As she sat on the couch across from his desk, eating quietly, he suddenly said, “My ex is back.”

Luna almost choked. “Your what?”

Killian leaned back. “Vivienne. We were together for three years. She owns part of the fashion company I’m acquiring.”

“Oh.”

“She likes to cause problems,” he added. “Don’t let her get to you.”

“Why would she get to me?”

Killian hesitated. “Because she’s the jealous type. And she doesn’t like new women around me.”

Luna blinked. “We’re not—”

“I know. But she doesn’t.”

Luna nodded slowly. “Understood.”

But deep down, she wasn’t sure she did understand. Was this just a warning? Or was he trying to protect her… from something more?

---

At 3:00 p.m., Luna followed Killian into the private conference room for the investor meeting. The room was smaller and quieter than the usual boardroom. Only three people were present — Killian, Luna, and a man in a dark green suit she hadn’t seen before.

“This is Mr. Rivas,” Killian said. “He’s considering a large investment in the company.”

Rivas had sharp features and eyes that didn’t blink enough. He stared at Luna a little too long.

“So… this is the famous assistant,” he said slowly. “You’ve been quite the topic lately.”

Luna forced a polite smile. “I’m just here to do my job.”

“Oh, I’m sure you do it very well,” he said, his tone slippery.

Killian’s jaw tightened. “We’re here to talk numbers, not gossip.”

“Of course,” Rivas replied with a smirk.

But throughout the meeting, Luna felt his eyes on her. Watching. Studying. Like he already knew something he wasn’t saying.

And when he left, he handed Killian his card — and slid a folded piece of paper across the table toward Luna.

She opened it once they were alone.

“He won’t protect you forever. Some things always come to light.”

Luna’s hands shook. “Who is this man?”

Killian took the paper, read it, and frowned. “He’s dangerous. And too interested in you.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know yet. But I’ll find out.”

For the first time, Luna saw real concern in Killian’s eyes. Not just as a boss. But as a man who wanted to protect her.

---

Later that day, things got worse.

Vivienne showed up.

She walked into the building like she owned it — high heels clicking, red lipstick perfect, black sunglasses resting on her head like a crown. She went straight past security and straight into Killian’s office.

“Who’s that?” someone whispered near Luna.

“That’s her.”

Luna stood up and followed, but not too closely.

She watched from a distance as Vivienne leaned across Killian’s desk, touching his hand.

“I missed you,” she said loudly.

Killian didn’t move. “What do you want, Vivienne?”

“To talk,” she said, her eyes flicking toward the glass — toward Luna.

“Alone.”

Killian’s eyes narrowed. “She stays.”

Vivienne’s smile faded. “Really?”

“She works for me.”

“I used to, too,” she whispered. “In a different way.”

Luna looked away.

Vivienne finally turned and stormed out — but not before stopping beside Luna’s desk.

“She won’t keep you around long,” she said coldly. “He gets bored fast.”

Luna said nothing.

But deep inside, her heart was pounding.

---

That night, as she packed her things, Killian approached her desk.

“I’m driving you home,” he said.

“What? Why?”

“Because I don’t trust Rivas. Or Vivienne. And someone sent you a threat this morning.”

Luna hesitated, then nodded. “Okay.”

In the car, they sat in silence for a while. Then he said, “Why do you keep staying here, Luna?”

She looked at him. “Because I need this job.”

“Is that the only reason?”

She swallowed. “I don’t know anymore.”

His hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“You’re not like anyone I’ve worked with before.”

“And you’re not like any boss I’ve worked for.”

He looked at her then — really looked.

There was something in the air between them now. Something electric and dangerous.

But neither of them said a word.

Because falling would break every rule they’d made.
