Friday night in New York meant crowded streets, glowing lights, and the low hum of life echoing through every avenue. Madison stood outside the upscale Midtown restaurant Nicholas had chosen, hugging her coat tighter against the crisp air.
When his black car pulled up, her heart did a stupid little jump.
Nicholas Grey (ML)
(Stepping out of the car, eyes sweeping over her) You’re… on time.
Madison Torres (FL)
(Grinning) Don’t sound so surprised.
Nicholas Grey (ML)
(Nods at her dress) You clean up… decently.
Madison Torres (FL)
(Playfully) Oh my god. Was that a compliment? Stop. I’m blushing.
Nicholas Grey (ML)
(Deadpan) Don’t get used to it.
The hostess seated them in a quiet corner of the restaurant, away from prying eyes. Madison watched him across the table as he loosened his tie, looking more human than she’d ever seen him in the office.
Madison Torres (FL)
(Sipping her wine) You’re actually kind of charming when you’re not barking orders at me.
Nicholas Grey (ML)
(Raising a brow) And you’re less irritating when you’re not talking.
Madison Torres (FL)
(Snickers) Liar. You love when I talk.
Nicholas Grey (ML)
(Quietly, almost smiling) …Maybe.
For the first time in months, Nicholas felt himself relaxed. And Madison… she felt her guard slipping, just a little.
As they left the restaurant, his hand brushed hers.
