Don't fall for the paws

Jenna let out a childish cry, her voice laced with indignation. “That was my cake!” She glared down at the kitty sprawled on her lap, a tiny creature with wide, innocent eyes and soft fur that made most people coo with delight. But not Jenna. She narrowed her eyes, giving the feline a death glare that said, "You little thief." A wave of suspicion washed over her—she had heard the tales. Nekos were just as cunning as other Kitsune, sneaky little beings that wormed their way into hearts, only to turn around and claim their prize. This cat had devoured her last piece of the cake without so much as blinking an eye, and after it would use a sweet meow. The audacity! Yet, in a sudden shift, she found herself holding the wicked little whiskers in her arms, the tension in her body melting away as she buried her face in the soft fur. It was warm and comforting, almost reminiscent of her tail, which always brought her a sense of calm. Jenna sighed, a reluctant smile creeping onto her lips. Sometimes, trust was hard to grant, but in this cozy moment, it felt like she could forgive the cake-stealing mischief. Maybe, just maybe, she could allow herself to enjoy this unexpected companionship after all.

Still cradling the fluffy whiskers, Vence addressed the little poofball with a playful frown. “Daisy, that wasn’t nice.” The feline, unimpressed by his lecture, let out a grand yawn, showcasing her sharp little teeth, before leaping gracefully from Jenna's arms. With a flick of her fluffy tail, she trotted toward the inviting bedroom, a plush haven of pillows and blankets where she intended to nestle down for the night. As the evening settled in, cloaking the world in softer shadows, Jenna couldn’t help but follow suit. With Daisy's huge yawn still echoing in her mind, she found herself mirroring it, the fatigue of the day washing over her. The night wrapped around them like a comforting blanket, time slipping away unnoticed. Eventually, Vence ventured into the bedroom, retrieving an extra pillow, its fabric soft and welcoming. He tossed a thin brown blanket casually over his shoulder, holding the pillow with both arms. “Here, you can use this to sleep with,” he announced loudly, his voice echoing gently in the quiet of the room. As he walked back out, he glanced around and was met with a surprising sight: Jenna, curled up tightly on the floor, her body forming a cocoon around her tail, sleeping peacefully. With a fond smile, Vence left the blanket draped over the small leather couch, along with the pillow on the arm, its rich texture contrasting with the cool evening air. As he made his way to his room, he ended up in the bathroom. The sound of the house settling around him drifted into the background as he lost himself in thought while turning the shower knob to hot. He tossed his clothes into an empty small basket before jumping in. Thoughts swirled in his mind about the situation he found himself in. It was hard to believe he had welcomed a stranger—particularly a female from another realm—into his home. While he intended to help Jenna, an underlying anxiety gnawed at him. Would she be safe here? For how long could she stay without endangering them both? As he turned off the shower, he grabbed a towel hanging over the curtain, wiping his face before wrapping it around himself and stepping out. After putting on a clean set of clothes, he climbed into his own bed. He turned off the lights, and the room plunged into darkness. Questions danced through his mind like restless shadows, each one tethered to the uncertainty of tomorrow.
