TAEKOOK -- THE FROSTED CONSORT
3
The wind howled softly through the corridors of the Cold Palace, its shrill whispers weaving between cracked pillars and weather-worn doors, brushing past heavy silk curtains like the ghost of a forgotten spring.
It had been four years since Consort Jeon Taehyung, once the brightest jewel in Emperor Jungkook’s eyes, was banished to this forsaken wing of the palace — a place where warmth dared not linger and where time forgot to move.
Inside, among pale lantern light and blooming chrysanthemums in cracked pots, Taehyung sat gracefully by the window, dressed in layers of snow-colored silk that only made his skin seem even more ethereal. His eyes were no longer gentle. Not anymore.
Once, they had been soft and wide — like the sky before rainfall, filled with love, longing, and the reflection of a king’s promises. Now they were distant. Emotionless. Cold.

Ye-Eun, What day is it today?
Taehyung’s voice broke the silence, elegant and unhurried. Ye-Eun, his only maid and perhaps the only soul who still remained loyal, knelt beside him with a tray of warm tea.

It’s the second full moon of autumn, Your Highness. The chrysanthemums are blooming… just like the day His Majesty first brought you to the Grand Hall.
Taehyung didn’t flinch. He didn’t smile either. He merely looked away, gaze following a leaf falling from a crooked branch.

How ironic, a flower that blooms in cold, only to be trampled by those basking in sunlight.
The palace had once echoed with the laughter of the newly wedded Jeon Taehyung, a royal prince orphaned by war and tragedy, taken in by the Jeon Kingdom as a gesture of alliance. Emperor Jeon Jungkook, still young and full of fire, had fallen deeply in love with him.
The kingdom celebrated their union — though Taehyung was the only male consort, he was cherished. But love in the palace is a dangerous thing. With time came Concubine Mina, Concubine Ye-Ji, and Concubine Yuxi-Bai. Then came Queen Li Ara, selfish and cunning, draped in beauty and poison. Her tongue was silver; her smile venom.
They all saw what Taehyung had — not only Jungkook’s affection, but dignity, grace, and respect. And they hated him for it. Whispers turned to accusations.
Accusations turned into staged scandals. And one night… Taehyung waited.
He had lit every candle. Dressed in silk. Perfumed his skin. Opened his heart. That was the night he had finally decided to offer himself to Jungkook. The night he had longed for since the beginning. But Jungkook never came. Instead, guards arrived — not with love, but with chains and orders.

Your Highness, the palace is celebrating Princess Seo-Ha’s fourth birthday tonight. There will be fireworks.

They… say you’re barren. That you were never fated to bear an heir.

No. I simply never gave him the chance to make me one.
Ye-Eun looked startled. But she said nothing. She knew the truth. She knew the night it all changed — the night he was ready to give himself was the very night Jungkook threw him away. A silence fell again until Ye-Eun spoke carefully.

Do you.... still love him?
Taehyung didn’t answer right away. He stared out at the moon, its light brushing over his pale cheekbones like a forgotten kiss.

I don’t know what love is anymore, Ye-Eun. But whatever it was… it’s buried beneath this cold moon.
In the Imperial Chambers…
Jungkook sat on the dragon throne, but his mind was far away. Eun-Sol and Seo-Ha played at his feet, and Li Ara laughed beside him with wine in her hand.
Yet…
All he could think about was how Taehyung’s eyes used to light up when he smiled. How he used to rest his head against Jungkook’s chest and whisper poems of distant stars.
Now, all Jungkook received was silence. The kind that stings. The kind that accuses without words. But he couldn’t admit regret. Not yet. Instead, he watched the fireworks paint the sky — red, gold, violet — as the whole palace celebrated. And somewhere far in the Cold Palace, a single chrysanthemum bloomed alone.
