Price Of Passion (YiZhan)
Ep4
the garden behind the hospital. Xiao Zhan was squatting, his white coat rhyming. and there comfortably against the lap it was Cheeze, the little kitten they found a week ago, crying behind the storage shed..
Cheeze purred with snuggling, tail wiggling, while Zhan gently stroked his fur with the tips of his fingers.
Xiao Zhan
"You like to waste my time, hm?"
Wang Zhuocheng
"He likes you too much" came Wang Zhaucheng’s voice as he walked toward them.
Xiao Zhan
Zhan smiled, not looking up. "he just knows I’m the one who saved him."
Wang Zhuocheng
“You saved him, fed him, gave him a name, and now you’re blaming his attachment on you?”
Wang Zhuocheng
Zhaucheng sat down beside him, shaking his head with mock disapproval. “Unbelievable.”
Xiao Zhan
Zhan chuckled softly. “You’re the one who wrapped him in your scarf when he was shivering.”
Wang Zhuocheng
“I did not!” Zhaucheng said quickly, too quickly. “Plus that scarf was old. I was going to throw it away.”
Xiao Zhan
Zhan turned to him with an amused look. “It still had your initials stitched on it.”
Wang Zhuocheng
Zhaucheng looked away. “Coincidence.” cough follows.
Cheeze meows loudly then, pushing his little head into Zhan’s hand as if demanding more attention.
Wang Zhuocheng
"He thinks you're his person,” Zhaucheng muttered “You always attract the fragile ones."
Xiao Zhan
Zhan’s expression softened. "Maybe because I understand them."
Zhaucheng didn’t reply. He just watched Zhan for a long moment, the way his eyes were distant yet so gentle when they landed on the kitten.
He knew Zhan had grown up in a house with no warmth, no kindness, only a mother who knew how to hurt better than anyone else.
This garden, this kitten, this moment. it was a rare peace. Then it shattered.
A loud sound of sirens. The ambulance van through the front gate.
Xiao Zhan
Zhan stood up immediately, carefully setting Cheeze down under a bench.
Wang Zhuocheng
“Go inside,” Zhaucheng said, already pulling his id card from his pocket. “I’ll lock the garden gate.”
Xiao Zhan
“We’ll be back,” he whispered to Cheeze. “Wait for us, alright?”
Wang Zhuocheng
Zhaucheng met him at the gate and gave a nod. “Let’s move, Doctor Xiao.”
Xiao Zhan
Xiao Zhan tightened his gloves as the stretcher rolled in. a lady lying on it clutched her belly, soaked in sweat and pain. Her screams echoed across the hospital's walls.
“She was found collapsed near the bus station,” a nurse explained quickly. “No phone, no name. She’s pregna-”
Xiao Zhan
“How far along?” Zhan asked, eyes scanning vitals on the monitor.
“We don’t know. She couldn’t speak clearly.”
Xiao Zhan
“Ma’am,” he said gently, kneeling beside the stretcher, “I’m Doctor Xiao Zhan. You’re safe now. Can you tell me how many months you are.?”
She cries in response, clutching his coat sleeve like a lifeline. “Hurts.. hurts so bad… My baby… please…”
Xiao Zhan
“Okay,” he said softly, placing a hand gently on hers. “Don’t speak. We’re going to take care of both of you. I promise.”
Xiao Zhan
He turned to the nurses. “Get me an ultrasound, now.”
The woman screamed again, her body arching, Zhan flinched, but his hands remains steady.
Xiao Zhan
“There’s no time,” he muttered, then added louder.
Xiao Zhan
“We’re skipping the scan. Prep for emergency delivery now. Her contractions are close. baby is coming.”
“But-” a younger nurse started, “we don’t even know how far-”
Xiao Zhan
“She’s full-term,” Zhan cuts her off, his voice sharp.
Xiao Zhan
“I can feel the baby. She’s already dilated. She's nine months, probably overdue. We can’t wait any longer.”
