I still can't forget the day my whole family was killed by a demon. I just wish I was strong enough to save them but I was too weak and young that day.
I was with my family that day in the afternoon.
Y/n's mom
Rikuya! Can you go cut some woods for the fire.
Y/n (11)
Can I help Rikuya?
Y/n's mom
Y/n you know you are too young to cut wood.
Rikuya (15)
It's okay mom she can come along with me, besides I can protect her.
Y/n's mom
Ok fine just come back before dinner gets cold.
Rikuya (15)
Alright, this spot looks good. Stay over there, okay? I donโt need you getting hurt.

Tchโฆ Iโm not a baby, Rikuya.
(I crossed my arms and puffed my cheeks.)

(laughing)Yeah, yeah, sure youโre not. But youโre still my little sister, and itโs my job to look out for you.

(grinning as he picked up the axe)Oh? Is that so? Well, when that day comes, youโll have to protect me then, deal?

Good. But until then, let me handle the dangerous stuff, alright?
I nodded, sitting down on a fallen log nearby, watching him swing the axe down cleanly through a thick piece of wood.

Rikuyaโฆ do you think Iโll ever be strong enough to protect everyone?
Rikuya (15)
(pausing, leaning the axe on his shoulder)Of course you will. Youโve got fire in you, Y/N. Just like Dad, and Grandpa before him. Youโre brave โ even if youโre small now.
Y/n (11)

Rikuya (15)
(smiling softly)I mean it. Youโll be amazing one day, I promise.
I felt my heart get warm hearing that.
Y/n (11)
Iโll train really hard then. Iโll be the strongest girl in the world!
Rikuya (15)
(laughing)Thatโs the spirit.
He reached over and ruffled my hair, and I didnโt even swat his hand away this time.

The family began eating, the warm scent of rice and grilled fish filling the room.

(laughing)I cut a bunch of them, big and small. I even had some help.
(Winks at y/n.)

Y/N (grinning proudly): I watched him, and I didnโt even get scared!

Kohana (wide-eyed): Wow! I wanna come next time too!

(smiling softly)Maybe when youโre a little older, Kohana. Itโs not safe for little girls out there.

(pouting slightly)Hmphโฆ okay.
Rikuya (15)
Donโt worry, Iโll bring back some pretty flowers for you next time.

(brightening)Really? Pink ones?

And maybe some for me too, right?

(teasing)You gotta earn it by chopping wood first.
The family shared a warm laugh as the evening sun painted the room in soft orange hues. It felt safe. It felt perfect.
Y/n's mom
Y/n's mom: It's bed time go sleep
All: Ok mother good night
I was sharing a bed with Rikuya and I couldn't fall asleep

(softly)Not sleeping are you?

(whispering)I can't seem to fall asleep

(smiling gently in the dark)want me to tell you a story?

(brightening a little)Yes!

okay promise me you will fall asleep when I'm finished

(grinning and making a pinky promise) Promise

(thinking for a moment, then starting)Once upon a time, there was a brave little fox who wanted to become the strongest in the whole forest. Even though she was small, she had a big heart and never gave up. All the other animals would tell her she was too tiny, but she believed she could do it.

(smiling sleepily)Just like me.
Rikuya (15)
(soft chuckle)Yeahโฆ just like you. One day, a big storm came to the forest, and all the animals got scared. The little fox didnโt run away she ran toward the storm, and she saved her family by finding them a safe cave to hide in. Everyone cheered for her, and from then on, they called her the bravest one in the forest.
Y/n (11)
(yawning)She sounds so coolโฆ
Rikuya (15)
(whispering)She was. And youโll be even cooler than her one day, Y/N. I just know it.
Y/n (11)
Iโm gonna be braveโฆ like the foxโฆ and you.
Rikuya (15)
I know you will, little sis.
He reached over and gently patted my head, and for the first time that day, my eyes slowly fluttered shut.
Rikuya (15)
(whispering, more to himself)Iโll always protect you, no matter what.
The soft sound of crickets filled the night, and soon both of us drifted off to sleep.
I woke up at some noises and screams from outside the room. Me an my brother woke up.

(serious)Y/n get behind me.
Y/n (11)
(gets behind him)Rikuya I'm scared what's happening?
Rikuya (15)
(softly)It's alright Y/n, I will protect you.
He went to get an axe and went back to me.
Rikuya (15)
Y/n make sure you stay alive.
As he said that he told me to hide in the closet.
Y/n (11)
(scared)What about you Rikuya?
Rikuya (15)
(smiles softly)I will be fine I promise. (closed the closest door)
After he closed the closest and went outside the room I started hearing loud noises and it stopped and I heard the bedroom door open and heard foot steps. I prayed that it was Rikuya and he was alright. And the closest door opened

Well, well, well...What do we have here
I clutched my hands over my mouth, trying not to scream. My heart was pounding so loud I thought it would give me away.
Demon
(leaning closer, voice cold)A little rat hiding in the closet? How adorable.
I could barely breathe, tears welling up in my eyes. Whereโs Rikuyaโฆ? Pleaseโฆ please be okayโฆ

(shouting from behind)GET AWAY FROM HER!
A blur of motion โ the sound of an axe slicing through the air.
Demon
(growling as it dodges)Tchโฆ persistent brat!
Rikuya (15)
(panting, voice trembling but firm)You wonโt touch herโฆ as long as Iโm alive!
Y/n (11)
(from the closet, crying softly)Rikuyaโฆ
I could see a little through the cracks in the door โ Rikuya was bleeding, but his eyes were sharp, his hands tight on the axe.
Rikuya (15)
(glancing toward the closet)Stay hidden, Y/N. No matter what you hearโฆ donโt come out.
Y/n (11)
(whispering through tears)Noโฆ noโฆ pleaseโฆ
Demon
(grinning)Youโre brave, boy. But you shouldโve run when you had the chance.
The demon lunged, and Rikuya raised the axe one last time.
Rikuya (15)
(shouting)RUN WHEN YOU CAN, Y/N! I LOVE YOU!"
The sound of a heavy blow. I shut my eyes, sobbing into my hands.
The room went silent. No voices. No footsteps.
Just my own shaking breath.
I donโt know how long I stayed in there, but eventually, the morning light crept in through the cracks.
Slowly, with trembling hands, I pushed open the closet door.

(softly, broken)Rikuyaโฆ?
That was the dayโฆ I lost everything.
