the great escape

[Elias’s Chambers, Late Night]
Elias paced in front of the tall windows, the moonlight catching the edge of his silk robe. Rowan stood by the door, arms crossed, his jaw set like stone.

I still think this is an overreaction. A prince does not run from shadows, Rowan.

And a corpse cannot wear a crown, Your Highness. We leave before dawn.
Elias’s hand hovered over the tassels of a curtain, clenching them in frustration. The tension between them hung as heavy as the gilded tapestries adorning the chamber walls.

So dramatic. Are you this insufferable with everyone, or am I special?
Rowan(ml)
Rowan(ml)
(Deadpan) you are special, my prince. No one else has quite your talent for arguing against self-preservation.
The sharp retort almost made Elias smile, but he turned away, his expression tightening. A soft knock interrupted the silence, and Lady Maris swept in, Orin trailing behind her with a satchel slung over his shoulder.

You two sound like an old married couple.
Elias shot her a withering look, but she only smirked, unrolling a map on the small oak table. Orin began unpacking the satchel, laying out dark cloaks, forged documents, and a small dagger.

The route?

Through the north passage. Minimal guards tonight thanks to our little… distraction. Orin has ensured that the records show Elias in the east wing until tomorrow morning.

(Glancing at the map )And after the north passage?

A carriage waits by the riverbank. The driver is loyal, but the journey will still be dangerous. The faction is closing in faster than we anticipated.
Rowan nodded, already scanning the map with precision. Elias’s gaze flickered between the three of them, a rare moment of doubt shadowing his face.

And what if we—

(Cutting in )We will succeed. I’ll make sure of it.
The room fell into silence. For once, Elias didn’t argue. Orin handed him a plain cloak, and he slipped it on, the weight of anonymity settling over his shoulders.
[The North Passage, Pre-Dawn]
The passage was cold, the air thick with dampness. Footsteps echoed faintly as Rowan led the way, his hand never straying far from the hilt of his sword. Elias followed closely, his usual grace subdued by caution.

(Whispering) I’ve never walked these halls before. They feel… forgotten.

They were built for moments like this. For royals to vanish when needed.

(Softly)Vanishing doesn’t suit me.

(Pausing to glance back )No, but surviving does.
They exchanged a look, one that lingered longer than either intended. The moment broke as Maris’s voice echoed softly behind them.

We’re nearly there. Keep moving.
The group pressed on, the faint sound of the river growing louder with each step. Finally, they emerged into the cool, pre-dawn air. A lone carriage waited, its driver nodding curtly at Rowan.

This is where we part ways. Stay alert. We’ll communicate through the usual channels.

(Hesitating)Maris…
She gave him a rare, genuine smile, placing a hand briefly on his shoulder.

You’re stronger than you think, Elias. Trust Rowan.
With that, she turned and disappeared into the shadows, Orin following close behind. Elias climbed into the carriage, Rowan taking the seat opposite him. The door shut, and the horses began to move. For a moment, the only sound was the creak of wheels and the distant hoot of an owl. Elias stared out the window, his reflection blending with the darkened landscape.

(Quietly )Do you ever grow tired of carrying everyone else’s burdens?
Rowan(ml)
Rowan(ml)
(Equally quiet )Do you?
Elias turned to him, surprise flickering in his eyes. Rowan held his gaze, the tension between them shifting, softening just slightly. The road stretched ahead, uncertain and perilous. But for the first time, neither felt entirely alone.
