Chapter 1: The Fall of the Forest
The sun hung low, brushing the treetops in honey gold.
Gentle wind swayed the tall grass, the forest humming with life.
Birds chirped lazily, bees danced between wildflowers, and in a quiet hollow, laughter rang out.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(excited tone) Kai! You promised to race me!
Kai / FL Brother / Fox Form
(playful, teasingly) You’re still too slow.
Kai / FL Brother / Fox Form
You’ll never catch me, little tail!
Izzy’s orange-gold eyes sparkled as she chased after her older brother, their fox forms darting between trees like streaks of firelight.
Their fur shimmered under the afternoon sun, golden and warm, blending with the autumn leaves.
Around them, other spiritual foxes played, napped, or basked in the peaceful glow of a life untouched by the outside world.
They were spirits of the land, born with magic in their blood and hearts bound to each other.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(soft smile) I wish it could stay like this forever…
But fate was listening.. and it had other plans.
A sudden crack.. a sound that didn’t belong.. snapped through the forest.
Birds shrieked. The earth stilled. The scent of iron and smoke filled the air.
Kai / FL Brother / Fox Form
(alert) Izzy, run. Now.
Metal traps. Nets infused with strange energy. Shouts. Barking dogs.
Humans in dark uniforms poured in with cages and guns, not ordinary hunters, but fox catchers.
The peaceful glade turned into a nightmare.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(panicked) Kai! Where are you?!
She ran. Branches tore at her fur.
The screams of her kin echoed behind her.
She caught one last glimpse, Kai turning back, teeth bared to protect a young fox before a net dropped over him.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(whispering) No… no, no, no…
But she couldn’t help him. She couldn’t help anyone.
She barely made it past the clearing, hidden by roots and shadows until silence fell.
She stayed frozen there, for what felt like hours.
Then… she followed the trucks.
Into the world of humans.
The trees ended, and concrete began.
The towering buildings loomed like cliffs. The air was sharp with gasoline and noise.
Cars roared past like beasts of steel. People bustled, unaware of the small fox hiding behind a fence.
She slipped on her bracelet.
Her fur shimmered, limbs stretching into human shape.
Her tail and ears vanished.. though her eyes stayed the same.
Barefoot and wearing only a simple cloak woven from forest magic, Izzy stepped into the city.
Izzy / FL Human Form
(wide-eyed) So many humans…
Izzy / FL Human Form
How do I find my brother?
She approached a woman outside a shop, trying to be polite like Kai taught her.
Izzy / FL Human Form
(nervously) Excuse me, have you seen… people with big metal cages?
Izzy / FL Human Form
They took my brother…
Stranger
(confused frown) What are you talking about? Are you okay?
Others looked at her oddly. Her clothes were strange.
Her words didn’t make sense. She didn’t know how to lie, or how to mask the panic in her voice.
A man approached her next, kind smile, soft words.
Stranger
(falsely kind) You’re looking for someone? That’s awful.
Stranger
Here, let me help. Just come with me.
He gave her bread. She smiled, grateful.
She didn’t see the glint in his eyes as he reached for her wrist.
In a moment of distraction, he slipped the bracelet off.
Izzy / FL Human Form
(panicking) Wait—! Give it back!
She chased him through crowded streets, bumping into strangers, getting shoved and cursed at.
Without the bracelet, she could feel the strain on her form.
Her magic flickered. Her human shape wavered like smoke in the wind.
Izzy / FL Human Form
(whispering) No, no, no… I can’t shift again without it…
She stumbled into an alley, shrinking behind a pile of boxes.
Her body trembled as it reverted to her fox form, fur wet from sudden rain.
She curled into herself, cold and hungry.
The smells were overwhelming. trash, chemicals, fire. Her belly ached.
Her paws were raw. No one looked her way. Not even the children.
Days passed in a haze. She tried to steal scraps. Got chased. Barked at. Kicked.
Every night, she whispered Kai’s name.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(voice cracking) Where are you…? I’m trying…
On the third night, the hunger gnawed too deep.
She ventured from the alley, weak and slow, her tiny frame barely dodging the flashing lights and thundering wheels.
Suddenly, a sharp, brutal, car horn blared.
She froze. The world went white.
Pain. Burning. Her body hit the ground and rolled. Tires screeched. Voices shouted.
Izzy / FL / Fox Form
(thought fading) Kai… I’m sorry… I couldn’t… find you…
Then someone was calling out.. faint, distant.. Footsteps ran toward her broken body.
Strong hands lifted her gently. A heartbeat steady against her tiny body.
His voice was calm, but worried.
Dr Michael Ren / ML
(murmuring) Hang in there, little one.
Dr Michael Ren / ML
You’re not dying tonight.
