Secrets Beneath Cherry Blossoms

Episode 1: Secrets Beneath Cherry Blossoms

The late afternoon sunlight poured through the canopy of blooming cherry blossoms, scattering pink petals across the narrow streets of Hanamura High. The soft breeze carried laughter and chatter as students hurried out of class, eager for freedom.

Leaning against the iron gate with casual disinterest, Hiro watched the crowd. His black leather jacket creaked softly as he adjusted his stance, one hand slipping into his pocket where a small folded paper lay—an origami crane, delicate and precise. A secret gift for someone he barely knew but couldn’t stop thinking about.

To most, Hiro was the classic bad boy — reckless on his motorbike, a little dangerous, and wrapped in an aura that kept people at arm’s length. But beneath the surface, he was a mystery even to himself, guarding a secret that weighed heavily on his soul: his younger sister, whom he cared for alone since their parents disappeared without a trace.

As the bell rang, students flooded the courtyard. Hiro’s gaze settled on Ayu, the school’s gentle, hardworking girl. She moved like a calm breeze amid the storm, clutching her books tightly as if they were a shield against the chaos. Her dark eyes lifted briefly to the blossoms, a soft smile touching her lips.

“Hey, bad boy,” a familiar voice interrupted. Takashi, Hiro’s childhood friend, approached with his usual calm demeanor but a teasing grin. “Late again. Don’t you ever get tired of making a dramatic entrance?”

Hiro smirked. “Why blend in when you can stand out?”

Takashi rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his concern. “Just don’t get caught sneaking out tonight. You’re not invincible, you know.”

Before Hiro could reply, Saya popped up beside Ayu with a loud whisper, “Did you see him staring at you? The scary biker dude? I swear, it’s like he’s got a secret crush or something.”

Ayu’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink. “Stop it, Saya! He’s not… that kind of person.”

Saya laughed, loud and carefree. “Oh please! Everyone has a soft spot. Yours just happens to be under all that leather.”

Later that day, in the art room, Ayu dipped her brush carefully into the paint, trying to capture the delicate pink of cherry blossoms. Her dream was simple — to win the school’s art contest and escape the shadow of her small-town life.

“Hey, Ayu!” Saya barged in, holding a ridiculous stack of flyers for the new “Love Advice Booth” she’d convinced the student council to set up for the festival. “We’re gonna help people find love! Or at least make a fool of themselves trying.”

Ayu raised an eyebrow. “And you want me to help how?”

Saya grinned, “Easy. You’re the voice of reason. I’m the crazy hype. It’s perfect!”

Ayu laughed softly, shaking her head. “I’ll think about it.”

Meanwhile, Hiro sat in his cramped apartment, the faint sound of his little sister’s giggles echoing through the walls. On the table before him lay a pile of folded origami cranes — his way of trying to bring some peace to their chaotic lives.

He folded another crane with careful fingers, then slipped it into his jacket pocket. Tomorrow, he’d give it to Ayu.

The next day at school, tension mixed with excitement as preparations for the festival began. Ayu was helping set up decorations with the art club, while Saya was already plotting how to attract customers to her booth.

Hiro kept his distance but watched Ayu carefully. When she stumbled and nearly dropped her paintbrush into a bucket of water, Hiro stepped in, catching the brush just before it splashed.

“Careful,” he muttered gruffly, brushing a speck of paint from her sleeve.

Ayu looked up, surprised. “Thanks, Hiro.”

He shrugged, trying to hide the warmth in his voice.

Nearby, Saya whispered loudly, “Did you see that? Smooth move, bad boy!”

Ayu rolled her eyes, but her heart raced faster than she wanted to admit.

**Mystery deepens:**

Later that evening, Ayu noticed a shadow lurking near the edge of the schoolyard — a girl she didn’t recognize, watching the school with sharp, calculating eyes. When their eyes met, the girl quickly vanished into the darkness.

The next day, a new student appeared: Rina. With piercing eyes and an unreadable smile, she transferred to their class. Rumors spread fast: Rina and Hiro shared a complicated past — why had Hiro disappeared from school for weeks last year?

Ayu couldn’t help but feel a chill whenever Rina was near.

**Comedy moment:**

The day of the festival arrived, and Saya’s Love Advice Booth was in full swing. Students lined up, eager or embarrassed, for ridiculous advice.

Takashi was first, nervously asking, “How do I ask Ayu out without sounding like a weirdo?”

Saya deadpanned, “Step one: Don’t mention my name.”

Then Hiro appeared, leaning casually against the booth. “Got any tips for a bad boy trying not to scare his crush?”

Saya smirked. “Yeah, try not falling off your bike in front of her.”

Just then, a stray soccer ball crashed into the booth, knocking over their posters and sending advice slips flying. Everyone burst out laughing, breaking the tension and reminding them that maybe love didn’t have to be so serious.

That night, Ayu held the tiny origami crane Hiro had slipped into her locker. Despite all the mystery and chaos, it made her smile. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to the bad boy than anyone knew.

But somewhere, hidden in the shadows, secrets waited — ready to unravel the fragile new connection between them.
