Jeongguk! Get your rear down here and get ready!
Jeongguk's mother shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
Uggggh
Jeongguk wished the pillow on his head could drown out his mom's voice. Jeongguk knew his mom would try one more time before coming up with her slipper. Jeongguk decided to chance it. He needed every extra minute of sleep he could get.
His soft bed wasn't willing to part with him and Jeongguk felt the same. He did the same things on all of his days off: staying up late and reading. And jeongguk wasn't someone who knew when to quit. He finally ran out of chapters of the story he was reading at 4:15 A.M.
Kim Yeji
Kim Yeji
Jeongguk! I swear to the Lord above! Don't you make me come up there.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
(What exactly is she swearing to anyway, and why is she bringing God into this?)
Jeongguk wondered in irritation. He reached his hand out of the mass of blankets and flailed it around wildly. It took a minute for him to locate his target but he did.
He dragged the phone into the safety of his blanket cocoon. Hus bleary eyes cracked just wide enough to check the time. Glowing numbers that read 10:22 A.M. glared at him mockingly. It was too early to get up.
Kim Yeji

Jeongguk ! Don't you dare make us late to church!
His mom was reaching the end of her patience.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
Go without me!
Jeongguk tried to shout back. Unfortunately for him, his mom wouldn't let him. It wasn't fair. He was nineteen years old, but his mom forced him to go to church.
Sure, Jeongguk didn't have to pay for rent, but he was in college. It wasn't like church would help him contribute to the bills.
Unfortunately for Jeongguk , his mother did come upstairs, slipper in hand. It shouldn't have scared Jeongguk as much as it did. He was an adult, but that slipper made him feel like a child again.
Jeongguk dragged his body out of bed and to the closest. He made sure all of his church clothes were wrinkled. It was an attempt to keep his mom from dragging him along.
His mom valued image and wrinkled church clothes were not acceptable. Sadly it wasn't enough of an effort this time. His mom only scowled at them.
Once dressed, Jeongguk brushed his teeth and was pushed out the house. His brother glared at him from his seat in the car. It wasn't Jeongguk fault that their mom subjected them to the torture that was Sunday sermons. He didn't have to look at him like he was to blame.
Jeongguk climbed into his seat and fell asleep in the car. His drool smeared on the window where his head rested. When he was shaken awake, he stumbled out the door without cleaning it up. They shuffled inside four minutes before the sermon started.
To Jeongguk’s credit, he managed to stay awake until the preaching began. As soon as the pastor started, Jeongguk knocked out while sitting up. He had long since mastered this skill.
Jeongguk woke up briefly whenever the pastor raised his voice and shouted angrily. Jeongguk’s mother would argue that he was passionate, but he just sounded enraged to Jeongguk. His stomach growled, earning another scowl from his mother and a new one from the lady immediately next to him. Rather than feel ashamed about it, Jeongguk just felt irritated from his lack of sleep and nourishment.
He couldn't help but think that his mother was sadistic, masochistic, or both. Why would anyone want to bring their embarrassing child to a public event unless it was a form of punishment for someone?
Since his mom insisted on torturing him like this, he wasn't going to make it easy. The best part about that? Jeongguk didn't have to try hard.
The pastor droned on and on, driving Jeongguk back to slumber. If God had any issues with him sleeping in his house, he never said anything to him. Jeongguk felt a painful jab in his side and found the culprit: his brother.
Jeongguk glared at him and he glared back. His stomach continued to rumble. Still, they had a long time to wait and no threat of physical harm could keep him from napping. Once the sermon was finally over, Jeongguk sneakily grabbed a pastry from the table of snacks and smuggled it out.
The whole way home, Jeongguk tuned out his mom's lecture while eating his muffin. Once they were back, Jeongguk used the bathroom and went back to bed. He immediately fell asleep.
After getting exactly 57 minutes of sleep, Jeongguk was woken up again.
Understanding that he lost his precious day off, Jeongguk went to do his chores. He may fight tooth and nail to avoid going to church, but he did what he did knowing his mom wouldn't kill him with witnesses and God present.
Church also put his mom in a good mood for some reason. Jeongguk had listened once to see what was good about it, but he came up with nothing positive. Since he tested his mom's patience once today, he wouldn't do it twice. He got his chores done so he could get his mom off his back. His attempt was a successful one.
His mom didn't bother him again until dinner. He took the time to check for any chapter updates and found one. One of the stories he was reading finally updated. It had been a long time since this author had updated.
Jeongguk quickly read through it and even somewhat enjoyed it. Unlike a lot of stories he had read, this one was okay. Not great, but entertaining enough. Most of the minor villains were pretty dull and made stupid so the main character could look smart, but the romance and harem building were pretty good. The heroine had also gone from an annoying (………) to a tolerable character. It may not have been amazing, but Jeongguk would keep reading it.
Jeongguk finished reading the chapter with a frown. He had thought that the main character, (………), was going to take a fifth mate, but now it looked like he was getting second lead treatment. Jeongguk sighed in exasperation. Why did it seem like (……….) was mostly accepting screwed-up men with deep-seated issues lately? The good ones kept getting friend-zoned.
Since Jeongguk had some time, he ignored his assignments in favor of a re-read. He would get his classwork done eventually. It had been a long time since Jeongguk read the first chapters and he had skimmed through them too quickly back then.
He didn't get far into the novel when his mom called him down to dinner. He ambled down the stairs while reading. With a frown on his face, Jeongguk showed up a the dinner table.
He forgot how annoying the main character was in the beginning. No matter what (……..) did or didn't do, she always escaped any lasting consequences while the men around her fell head over heels for her. She avoided responsibility for most of her actions while using culture shock as her excuse for everything. Jeongguk got it to an extent.
Their customs were really different, but dang.
It took the main character way too long to get over it.
Thank god the author improved the overall story at the end of the arc and start of the next, otherwise Jeongguk would have dropped it. He put his phone away and ate with his family.
He briefly glanced at his dad. His dark circles were practically swallowing his eyes at this point. He did work earlier, on a Sunday for Pete's sake. How many jobs do that? Jeongguk hoped it wasn't many.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
(His job was going to work him to death.)
Jeongguk figured they were all observant enough to know that chatting was a bad idea tonight. They ended up eating in silence.
Jeongguk did not give his mom a hard time afterwards and voluntarily helped with the dishes. Tomorrow, it would be his turn to help cook.
Other than a quick greeting to his dad, he and Jeongguk didn't speak. It wasn't like their relationship was bad, it just wasn't good either. They had neutral interactions and they didn't pester each other like Jeongguk and his mom did.
He didn't mind it and kind of preferred it.
His brother left the house to go hang out with friends, and Jeongguk went back to his room.
Thinking about how tired his dad looked, Jeongguk tackled his assignments. He was paying for his college and seeing him so beat strummed his guilt.
Once he completed the all the assignments due for the next three days, Jeongguk jumped in the shower. He spent an extra fifteen minutes soaking up the steaming water. After he finished, he got ready for bed.
Having finally completed everything he needed to do, Jeongguk checked the clock. It read 8:45 P.M.
He immediately noticed a message icon flashing on his phone from one of his friends.
Briar
Briar
What does this mean?
A picture of several kanji followed the inquiry.
Jeongguk snorted.
Just because he was half Japanese didn't mean he knew every kanji.
Heck, he only knew about as much as a grade schooler from Japan. They didn't exactly have the same curriculum here in the states where he was born and raised.
Jeongguk typed what he knew and told his friend to run an internet search for the rest.
Jeongguk wasn't volunteering for the research and his friend should know better than to ask. His phone vibrated with a reply.
Briar
Briar
You're the best! Any chance you can check for me? I don't know how to find it.
A kiss emoji followed.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
No,
Jeongguk typed back. Guess his friend didn't know him that well after all.
Jeongguk went back to reading. He made it to the part where the character, ironically named Jungkook, died. The death of the first antagonist to appear in the story marked ‘the end of the arc’.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
‘Finally’
thought Jeongguk . Although they shared a similar name (with same meaning), the villain and him were nothing alike. The Jungkook in the story was shallow, spoiled, hot-tempered, and always in the main character's business.
The villain managed to concoct a few half-baked plans to make the main character's life way harder than it needed to be, but lacked IQ everywhere in between. It was surprising he lived as long as he did with his attitude, but the story was better off without him.
Jeongguk checked his phone for the time; 10:57P.M. It was time to sleep. He had a 9 A.M. class tomorrow that he actually had to show up for. That professor was a stickler for attendance. Not that his mom would ever let him skip. Jeongguk figured it would be much too troublesome to have anything less than perfect attendance and would make sure to be there.
Jeongguk's eyes fell shut and he was asleep in minutes.
The next day, Jeongguk’s classes went as usual.
He paid just enough attention to the important points and zoned out for the rest. They were half-way through the semester, so he knew what to listen for and what was just his professor's ramblings.
Despite his seemingly lax approach to her own education, he made sure he never got anything less than an A in every class. Both of his parents were pretty stiff about that. Him and his brother had to make the minimum of a 90 in every class.
Jeongguk never overachieved. If the class was easy enough for him to pass with higher score, it was fine. He did not put in the extra effort as he saw no benefit to that. A high A was the same as a low A when GPA was calculated.
Jeongguk got home from school just before dinner and helped prepare it.
His dad sat at the table looking through work documents while sipping a coffee. Jeongguk's dad was a workaholic. Jeongguk would never bring his work home with him. He would find a job where it wasn't necessary and no boss could guilt him into it.
His dad fell into the category that tried to go above and beyond in the workplace. Jeongguk couldn't understand or accept that. It wasn't like he was getting paid for the extra effort nor was he in danger of being fired if he didn't do it. If this was all to earn brownie points from his boss, Jeongguk didn't feel like it was worth it.
While dinner was being cleaned up. His dad started a conversation with him.
Kim Hyung-Sik
Kim Hyung-Sik
How’s class?
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
Fine.
Jeongguk shrugged. He felt him probing him and tried to find something to add that would end the conversation sooner.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
Nothing too difficult.
Jeongguk was careful not to say that class was easy. Had he, his dad would expect higher grades or might even suggest he add on another class the next semester.
He was already signed up for six. He wasn't willing to sacrifice anymore of his precious free time.
Jeongguk's dad grunted in acknowledgement before turning back to his documents. Without looking up again, he said,
Kim Hyung-Sik

Go with your brother to the store. The list and money are on the counter. You'll both have enough left over to buy yourselves a snack.
That was the closest to a 'good job' he would get from him.
Jeongguk didn't want to go and didn't think that a snack was worth his time, but he didn't argue.
It was easier this way. Jeongguk grabbed his brother and dragged him with him.
Kim Hae-In
Kim Hae-In
What gives?
he asked in frustration.
Kim Jeongguk
Kim Jeongguk
Come on, Hae. Dad wants us to go to the store.
He knew that he wouldn't argue if he brought their dad up.
When their dad expected them to do something, they did it. He didn't strike the same fear into him that his mom's slipper did, but he felt like he should listen. Unlike his mom, his dad never asked too much of either of them. Only the standard things: stay out of trouble, get A's, achieve perfect attendance, and don't defy mom while he's around to see it or be involved.
Their mom told them to be careful as they walked out the door. His car started up after only two tries and they went on their way. Hae-In played on his phone and he turned on some light jazz. Both him and his brother were fine with almost any kind of music. Thanks to that, they didn't have any fights about it. Honestly, his fifteen-year-old brother was pretty reasonable for a teenager.
Even though Jeongguk felt that way, they weren't especially close. Jeongguk was the easygoing type where Hae-In was the serious one. He always finished all his work and chores well before he had to. He also tried to score as close to a perfect mark as he could on every test or assignment. He had to be on top of everything he did.
Of course, their parents loved him. They loved Jeongguk too, but their preference was pretty obvious. Jeongguk didn't feel especially sad considering how much effort Hae-In had to go through to achieve that. He was not willing to try half as hard, so he was welcome to soak up all the praise he didn't receive.
Jeongguk pulled into the parking space, made sure his car was exactly in the middle of the lines, and pulled up all the way. He couldn't afford anything happening to his car. If something did, he would have to take public transit to college. That sounded unappealing, so he took the time to make sure his car would be fine.
They divided up the list so that each of them will comb through one half of the store. They should be able to finish in 15 minutes like this.
The lines were longer than usual so it ended up taking 20.
Once they finished gathering the goods, Hae-In left Jeongguk in line to go chat with a classmate.
He stood there with his half-full cart while scrolling through his phone. There wasn't anything too new or exciting to see. He got a few messages from his friends and responded to them. They mostly talked about things he wasn't interested in. The last message he checked had more exclamation points in one place than Jeongguk had ever used in her life.
Briar
Briar
Guess who has tickets to the most amazing concert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
text-yelled her friend.
Briar
Jeongguk rolled his eyes as more messages from Briar spammed him. There wasn't much to guess here. There was only one concert that would get him this worked up. His favorite boy band must be playing in the closest major city.
Jeongguk was invited, but he didn't know if he should go. Sure, he liked the band well enough, but he was no crazy fan and they had crazy fans. Jeongguk couldn't compete with them and would rather make it out of the venue alive. It was a long drive too, and given the date... he had class earlier that day. It would be a rush to get there and that sounded like a pain.
He shot a

text to his friend and started loading his groceries onto the conveyer belt.
The rest of the day was uneventful and Jeongguk spent the evening relaxing. At least, he was until he got a text from another friend of his asking him to hang out. He felt like declining, but he had told 'no' to Eva too many times. At this rate, he would lose another friend. It wasn't like Jeongguk was super attached, but he still enjoyed hanging out with her. At least Eva was not as high maintenance as Briar was.

Be there in 20 minutes.
