The betrayal

Two weeks later, Martina returned from the post office, after going there to check once again if Stanley had written to her. She was very happy this time, when she found an envelope in her mail. It was bigger than she expected, and she kept wondering what else could be inside, apart from the letter she had been expecting. When she saw who it was from, she was happy and nervous at the same time. She decided to rush home, before she opens the envelope.

When she got home, she rushed to her bedroom and carefully opened the envelope. To her surprise, there was some money in the envelope along with a letter. She carefully opened the letter and read its contents. Stanley had written to her, but what he had written to her he had torn her heart in two. The letter read:

Dear Martina,

                       I am sorry it took me this long to write to you. It was quite difficult the first few months I got here and having a place to lay my head was proving a bit difficult. Fortunately, I met a woman here, her name is Grace, who out of generosity, decided to help me out. She gave me a place to lay my head and found a job for me. She has been very kind to me ever since she met me.

                      Now, I'm doing very well. I have some money saved up and I have my own apartment too. Things are really moving well for me. There is 1000 dollars in the envelope I sent. That money is to make up for the amount you gave me, when I wanted to travel abroad. Thank you so much for everything you have done for me.

                     I wish I could say this without hurting you but I have no choice than to say it. I am getting married. I don't know how this started but Grace and I fell in love. So, I decided to get married to her. I am very sorry if you are disappointed in me, but I can't be with you anymore. Find yourself another man, and love again. I wish you all the happiness in life. I am so sorry.

Martina felt dizzy all of a sudden after she was done reading the letter. She could not believe what she had just read. She reread the letter again to make sure that what she had just read is actually what she read. She began to cry her eyes out. How could Stanley do this to her after all the promises he made to her?

" No, Stanley, you can't do this to me. Why? Why? What did I do to you? What did I do to deserve this?" she asked herself over and over again.

She cried and cried till the tears were coming no more. She did not even have the strength to get out of bed anymore. The maids in the house tried to get her to eat something, but she refused.

Her parents came back from work later in the evening and were told about what was going on. Her mother tried to get her to talk but she did not want to. Her father tried as well but he had the same results.

Her parents became extremely worried. She no longer wanted to go to school. All she did was to lock herself up in her bedroom, crying her eyes out. Linda, her best friend, was told what was happening. She tried to get Martina to tell her what the matter was, but she never did.

After another two weeks of trying to persuade Martina to confide in her, Linda gave up asking. She still did her best as a friend, and did not leave Martina alone. She always came to see her and tried to cheer her up. Finally, Martina had the strength to go back to school again. She still had her end of semester exams ahead and she did not want to miss it.

A week later, Martina finally opened up to Linda and told her everything.

" That devil! How could he do this? After everything you have done for him, he still goes ahead and does this? He is an ingrate", Linda barks, after Martina had finished narrating everything to her.

" He just decided to throw away everything we shared without thinking twice. Was it a crime to love him, to want to see him happy?" Martina cried out.

Linda was so angry with Stanley. But, seeing her friend like this because of him, broke her heart into a million pieces. If Stanley was standing right in front of her, she would have slapped the living daylights out of him.

" Don't cry, Martina. That guy, never deserved you. You will get someone who will cherish and love you like you truly deserve, you will see", Linda tried to comfort her.

" No, I don't want to ever love anyone anymore. If love can hurt like this, then I don't want to love anymore", Martina said.

" No, Martina, you can't be serious about that. Listen, you are young and beautiful with the perfect body shape and a face of that of an African goddess, any man would kill to have you. If Stanley could not see that, then that's his loss", Linda said.

Martina continued to cry. She was grateful Linda did not blame her or tell her the usual ' I told you so'. Linda acted like a true friend to her and still stayed to listen to her. Her only regret was not listening to Linda when she told her that Stanley could not be trusted.

Linda hugged Martina, trying to comfort her, while she continued to cry. Linda was determined to help her friend get back to her old cheering self again. She knew it will take time, but she was willing to wait.

One afternoon, she was able to get Martina out of the house to go to a restaurant to eat with her. That was where they met Fred, and a another beautiful love story began.
