In the Land of Strangers, She Found Herself"
Hi, I’m Tanu, 18 years old, from Mumbai, India—and today might just be the most important day of my life.
It was a warm April afternoon. The ceiling fan spun lazily above my head as I sat at my study table, nervously refreshing my email every few seconds. My palms were sweaty, my heart pounding louder with every click. Today was the day—the results of the Bangkok University International Scholarship Program were being announced.
For months, I had dreamed of studying abroad. While most of my friends were preparing for admissions into Indian colleges, I had quietly applied for a BBA in International Business at Bangkok University. The idea of stepping into a new country, exploring global markets, learning from different cultures—it lit a spark in me I couldn’t ignore.
My parents were hesitant at first. “Thailand? Why not study here in Mumbai?” my dad had asked. But they saw how serious I was—how I stayed up nights perfecting my application, researching everything about Bangkok, and preparing for the interview. Gradually, their worry turned into support.
Now, everything comes down to this moment.
Refresh. Nothing. Refresh. Still nothing.
Then suddenly—ping!
My inbox flashed: “Bangkok University Admission Decision.”
Hands trembling, I clicked on it and read the first line out loud:
> "Dear Tanushree Sen,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for the International Scholarship Program for the Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business."
I froze.
Then screamed.
“MAA! PAPA! I GOT IN!!”
They rushed in, thinking something was wrong. But when they saw the tears in my eyes and the glowing email on my screen, their faces lit up with pride.
“You did it,” my father said, pulling me into a hug.
That moment changed everything. From a regular girl in Mumbai with a dream, I had become a scholarship student at a top international university.
you picked up your phone and dialed Aditya’s number. You could hardly contain your excitement—today was the day you were going to share the big news. The phone rang a couple of times before Aditya picked up, his usual cheerful voice greeting you.
“Hey, what’s up?” he asked, sensing something different in your tone.
“Hey Aditya, I’ve got something exciting to share,” you said, trying to keep your voice steady, but the excitement bubbling up inside you.
“What’s going on?” he replied, his curiosity piqued.
Taking a deep breath, you finally blurted out, “I got selected for Bangkok University!”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Then, Aditya’s voice came back, full of energy and happiness. “No way! That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you!”
You could almost hear the smile on his face. “Thanks, man. I’m still processing it, but I wanted to tell you first. You’ve been with me through all of this, you know?”
Aditya laughed, “I knew you’d make it. This calls for a celebration!”
You grinned, feeling the weight of the moment hit you. “Absolutely. Let’s meet up. I’ve got so much to figure out, but I’m excited to talk it all through.”
“I’m down,” Aditya said eagerly. “Let’s grab some food, catch up, and make a plan.”
You hung up, already looking forward to catching up with your best friend, celebrating the good news, and starting to figure out the next chapter of your life.
