Office Heat
By mid afternoon, Eli had learned three things.
One: The coffee machine on the 11th floor was cursed. It hissed, leaked, and gave up halfway pouring like it knew you were on the edge and wanted to push you over.
Two: Zack Reid had a terrifying ability to appear behind you without making me single sound.
And three: Lana Kim did not tolerate laziness, but she did, weirdly, tolerate him.
She said, slapping a thick file on his desk. Eli jumped.
Lana Kim
You catch on fast.
She leaned against his cubicle wall, sipping her iced Americano.
Eli Moore
I mean, I majored in finance but—
Lana Kim
Don’t mess this up, golden boy.
Lana started to walk off, then paused.
Lana Kim
Oh—before I forget.
Lana Kim
Company gala tonight.
Lana Kim
Starts at 7. Mandatory.
Her red lips curled upward.
Lana Kim
Welcome to corporate life, honey.
Lana Kim
No sleep, no life, but open bars and a decent chance of watching an executive cheat on their spouse.
He tried not to laugh but failed.
Eli Moore
What’s the dress code?
Lana Kim
And you better wear something sharp.
Lana Kim
Zack’s going to be there.
Eli Moore
Wait. Mr. Reid attends these things?
Lana Kim
He owns the building.
Lana Kim
He attends everything.
She said with a low chuckle.
Lana Kim
You don’t want to be the one he singles out.
Lana Kim
Especially not as an omega.
Eli Moore
I don’t think he knows I’m—
With that, she disappeared, heels echoing through the hallway like a count down.
Eli leaned back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling.
First day on the job and now he has to be in the same place with a man who didn’t even blink at him this morning.
He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced at the stack of files in front of him.
One night. You can handle one night.
He had no idea that night would be the one that ruined everything.
