The rain fell in icy sheets, blurring the neon lights of the city into a bleeding canvas of color.
A girl was running, her breath harsh in her ears, heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The shadows of the alley clung to her like old friends — but tonight, they could not save her
Her heels splashed through puddles as she glanced over her shoulder. Figures in black closed in, their footsteps muffled but steady. They had been waiting for her — setting the perfect trap.
And she, a fool, had walked right into it.

"Stop running, Lyra"
A familiar voice called out, twisted with contempt.

"That voice... No... It can't be possible..."
Turning slowly, she faced the figure stepping from the shadows, his face partially lit by a flickering streetlamp.

Her mentor. Her friend. The one she trusted most.

"You?" [Her voice cracked, disbelief cutting deeper than the wound blooming at her side.]

"why Jonas? "
Jonas shrugged, almost bored.
Jonas Vale (fl's mentor)
"You were never supposed to wake up. Never supposed to remember."
Lyra staggered back, clutching her bleeding side.

"I don't understand," [she whispered.] "I thought we were...."
Before she could finish, a bullet tore through her chest.
She collapsed onto the cold, wet asphalt.

"Wh...why..." [her voice faded, barely a breath.]
Jonas approached with a smirk, crouching beside her limp form.

"What a pity," [he murmured, lifting her chin roughly.]

"If you hadn't come back into my life with your powers... maybe I would have let you live."
Lyra's vision darkened, her body growing cold.
Her last thought before the world went black was a single word, heavy with sorrow and rage:
