Whispers in the Darkness

The sea was calm, but a restlessness had settled between the two travelers. The demon, sitting near the helm, kept his gaze fixed on the horizon, as if searching for something only he could see. The woman, for her part, walked across the deck with light steps, her usual energy somewhat tempered by the memory of the dark figure who had confronted them during the storm. Although she tried to maintain her cheerful demeanor, a trace of concern was reflected in her red eyes.

"Do you think he'll come back?" she asked suddenly, breaking the silence. Her voice was soft, but laden with curiosity.

The demon didn't respond immediately. His cold, distant gaze remained fixed on the horizon for a few more seconds before turning to her. "Yes."

He offered no further explanation, and his laconic response left the woman with more questions than answers. However, she didn't press the issue. She knew there was something profound he wasn't willing to share, at least not yet.

Night fell, and with it, a strange feeling seemed to envelop the ship. The moon, which had been their only beacon in the darkness, hid behind heavy clouds, plunging everything into darkness. The silence became oppressive, broken only by the sound of waves gently lapping the hull. The woman sat on the deck, hugging her knees as she gazed at the invisible stars. Her sky-blue hair gleamed faintly in the dim light, and her mind wandered, wondering what secrets her traveling companion was hiding.

That's when it happened. A whisper, barely audible, cut through the air. It wasn't the sound of the wind or the waves; it was something deeper, something that seemed to come from the very shadows that surrounded them. The woman jumped up, her gaze alert. The demon also moved, its posture rigid as if ready to face whatever it was.

"Did you hear it?" she asked, her tone a mixture of curiosity and fear.

"Yes," he replied, his voice as deep as the whisper that had disturbed them.

The sound was repeated, this time clearer. It wasn't a simple noise; they were words, though incomprehensible. They came from deep within the ship, as if something within was trying to communicate. The woman, driven by her curiosity, took a step toward the stairs leading to the hold. The demon stopped her with a gesture.

"Don't go down," he warned, his tone heavy with authority.

"Why?" she asked, challenging him with her vibrant gaze.

The demon didn't respond immediately. He seemed to be struggling with himself, as if the words he needed to say were too dangerous to speak. Finally, he spoke.

"Because there are things that shouldn't be revealed."

The woman, though intrigued, decided to follow his advice, at least for the moment. But something deep inside her knew that whisper was a calling, a secret she couldn't ignore forever.

That night, as they tried to rest, they were both visited by disturbing dreams. The demon saw images of a past he had tried to bury: bloody battles, betrayals, and a figure watching him from the shadows, identical to the one that had appeared on the ship. The woman, for her part, dreamed of deep waters that beckoned her, as if something at the bottom of the ocean were calling her.

At dawn, neither of them spoke about what they had seen in their dreams, but they both knew the ship was carrying more than just the two of them. An unknown presence, hidden in the depths, was beginning to manifest itself, and their journey was about to take an unexpected turn.
