Stiles didn’t realize how deep into the forest he’d wandered until the Jeep was long out of sight and the trees started pressing in around him like walls. The air grew colder, quieter. The kind of quiet that screamed something's watching.
Which was, of course, when he saw the eyes — glowing red and low to the ground.
“Okay,” Stiles whispered, backing up slowly. “Cool. Not creepy at all. Definitely not about to get murdered in a vampire-infested forest.”
The creature moved. Fast. A blur of pale skin and hunger.
But just before it reached him — something slammed into it.
A massive gray wolf. No — not a wolf.
Embry.
Fur flew. Snarls echoed through the trees. The vampire hissed, trying to get a grip on Embry’s fur, but Embry moved with brutal, calculated force. The fight was messy, primal. And short.
The vampire bolted into the trees, wounded and shrieking.
Embry shifted mid-run, stumbling into his human form, breath heavy. He was bleeding, a long cut across his shoulder.
“Stiles,” he barked, eyes scanning the shadows. “Are you okay?”
Stiles blinked. “I—yeah. I mean, you know. Emotionally? Not great. But physically I’m only bleeding a little.”
Embry grabbed his arm, inspecting a small gash on his forearm.
“Silver?”
“Metal fence post,” Stiles muttered. “Tripped trying to be brave. Didn’t work out.”
Embry exhaled, relieved. “You’re lucky I caught your scent.”
Stiles gave a shaky laugh. “You tracking me now?”
Embry smirked. “Maybe. You’re kinda hard to ignore.”
Stiles’ heart skipped. Definitely not the blood loss.
---
They made their way to a cabin near the edge of the forest, half-hidden by vines and fog. Inside, it was warm and quiet. Embry pulled out a first-aid kit, clearly used to dealing with injuries.
“You know,” Stiles said, wincing as Embry cleaned his arm, “this wasn’t how I expected my day to go. Detour, sure. Shirtless werewolf bodyguard? Not on the bingo card.”
Embry chuckled. “You’ve seen worse.”
“True. But somehow, still surprised.”
There was a pause. Then Embry glanced at him, something unreadable in his expression.
“You’re not like most humans,” he said quietly.
Stiles tilted his head. “Weird, anxious, and deeply sarcastic?”
Embry shook his head. “No. Brave. Even when you’re scared.”
Stiles blinked.
“Well, crap,” he said. “Now I have to stay in La Push longer.”
