CHAPTER 4

He left the bathroom… and I was alone.

That emptiness—it made everything feel strange. Heavy.

I finished my shower quickly, then walked to the mirror and started drying my hair. That’s when I felt it…

Like someone was watching me from behind.

I turned around quickly—But no one was there.

The bathroom door was slightly open.

But when he had closed it, it looked properly shut.

Maybe the wind pushed it open, I told myself, trying to stay calm.

I brushed it off, finished drying my hair, slipped into my T-shirt and lower, and was just about to walk out…

When I heard a sound—from behind me.

There was another door.At the back of the bathroom.

Closed.

Why… is there a door inside the bathroom?

What could be behind it?I tried to open the door…

It was locked.

“I’ll have to ask the landlady about this,” I mumbled to myself.

I stepped out of the bathroom.The corridor was dim—barely lit.And as I walked, I felt it again…

Like a shadow was following me.

But maybe it was just the darkness playing tricks on my mind.

I went downstairs, hung my towel on the balcony railing to dry, and then headed to the kitchen area for dinner.Trying to shake off the strange feeling that something—Or someone—was still watching me.

The kitchen wasn’t very big—just a small space.

There was a fridge, a stove on one side, and a few utensils lying around. Some dirty dishes sat in the sink, like no one had bothered to clean up.

I had assumed there would be a maid—someone who cooked meals here. But clearly, that wasn’t the case.

A man was sitting at the table, eating a sandwich…

At dinner time. Weird.

I tried to strike up a conversation and asked,

“Do they serve food here?”

He didn’t reply.Didn’t even look at me.Just kept chewing like I wasn’t even there.

I walked over to the fridge and opened it—There were some water bottles inside, each one looking like it belonged to a different person.

A few eggs.Some bread.A couple of vegetables.

Just enough to say, “Figure it out yourself.”

Guess I’d be cooking my own food too.

I started missing Maa…

Her warm hands serving curry and rice—

The comfort of her food hit me harder than the hunger itself.

My stomach growled louder.I decided to eat out.

I slammed the fridge door shut—loud enough so that sandwich guy would know I was pissed.

Let him guess why. Maybe he’d think twice before ignoring someone like that again.

I grabbed my wallet and headed toward the main door…But just as I reached it— I saw him.

The guy from the shower.

He was standing there, holding a black plastic bag.

Something about the way he was holding it… the way it hung heavily…

Made me wonder—

What’s inside that bag?
