Kali Kitaab

Location: Punjab Police Headquarters, Chandigarh

The big police building in Chandigarh was quiet, but never asleep. Inside the top floor, under a flickering tube light, a red folder lay open on ACP Sarabjit Bhullar’s desk.

Its name was handwritten in black ink:

Kali Kitaab – Top Secret

This was no normal file. It held the names of the most dangerous men in Punjab. Gangsters who ruled streets, silenced police, and controlled votes. Each page had blood behind it. Some names were crossed out. Some underlined. Some pages had burn marks.

One name was circled with thick ink.

Kaala Ranjha – Patiala

Bhullar looked at it for a long time. His tea had gone cold. Outside, sirens passed. Inside, silence sat heavy.

In Patiala, the city was bleeding, slowly.

Kaala Ranjha was not seen in public. But his name was everywhere. In gurdwaras, shop gossip, police whispers, mothers' prayers. People didn’t say his name at night. Children were told, “Sleep before Ranjha walks.”

Three officers from Patiala had gone missing. Two were found in the canal, mouths taped, hands tied, eyes open. The third — never found. No ransom. No note. No mistake.

Bhullar turned off the fan. His uniform stuck to his back. He picked up a pen and wrote one line under Ranjha’s name.

“Monitor 24/7 – use ghost team.”

No one else could see this file. Not even senior officers. Not because of secrecy — but fear. Even police stations in Patiala didn’t keep this file. They had burned their copies.

Some said this file was cursed.

The names written inside it never lived long.

Kaala Ranjha’s empire didn’t run like a movie gang. No big speeches, no street fights. Just cold orders. Passed silently. Killed perfectly. His people were in gyms, dhabas, mobile shops, even school committees.

He had money, guns, and something worse — silence.

In Patiala, an old haveli was locked for 20 years. But now, it had cars outside at night. No one saw who came in. But lights stayed on. And once, a young paperboy said he saw a man staring from the top window — still like a statue.

Eyes like coal. No eyelids blinked.

Bhullar closed the Kali Kitaab. He didn’t say a word. He walked to the window, looking out at the dark sky.

Somewhere out there, Kaala Ranjha was watching back.
