Anushka looked around, desperate. “You all trust me… right? You trust me? Please, say something…”
Her voice cracked, hope hanging by a thread. She needed someone—anyone—to say yes.
But the room stayed silent.
Her mother stood frozen. Her father’s gaze was unreadable. No one spoke.
From the side, her aunt’s eyes sparkled for a brief second, a flicker of cruel satisfaction. She quickly masked it, turning to Anushka’s father.

“Brother,” she said, her voice laced with false sorrow, “I told you. This girl was only born to ruin our name. She’s never brought us anything but shame.”
Her parents didn’t speak. They didn’t defend her. They just stared—broken, confused, unbelieving. And in their silence, their eyes asked the same question:
Why?

A sharp slap echoed through the living room, snapping Anushka’s head to the side.
She blinked, stunned, tears spilling down her cheeks. Slowly, she turned her face back, lips trembling, breath shaky.
It was her mother.
Her eyes burned with fury, her voice sharp and broken all at once.

“Why should I believe you?” she shouted. “Why, Anushka? Don’t you text him? Don’t you talk to that boy at night—from my phone?”

“I have proof,” her mother continued, her voice cracking. “I’ve seen your chats. I saw his message. Why is he saying I love you? Why?”
Anushka opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
