The Thorn Pact

Chapter 9: The Thorn Pact

The journey to the Lake of Whispers was long, but the silence that greeted Aiko and Sylen was far worse. No birds, no breeze—only stillness, thick and suffocating. The trees surrounding the water were ancient and twisted, their bark blackened and roots snaking like claws across the earth.

Aiko stood at the edge of the lake, her reflection shimmering on the surface like a phantom. The second fragment of the Heart was said to lie here, beneath the protection of the guardian known only as Fen. She clutched her satchel tightly, the first fragment faintly glowing through the fabric.

“Don’t speak unless spoken to,” Sylen warned softly, her voice unusually serious. “Fen doesn’t tolerate arrogance. Or questions. Or... most things.”

A ripple broke the surface of the lake, and from the center, Fen rose. Tall and slender, their form shimmered with silvery scales and robes of translucent mist. Their eyes were not eyes at all, but polished stones, reflecting the inner truths of those who stood before them.

“I feel the fracture within you,” Fen said, their voice like water trickling over glass. “You seek what should remain forgotten.”

Aiko lowered her head. “I seek to restore what was broken. To end The Void.”

Fen’s laugh was soft, bitter. “And you believe power will save you. Like so many before you.”

The lake darkened, and shadows swirled around Aiko and Sylen. The Trial of Reflections had begun.

---

Aiko stood alone in a forest she recognized—the royal gardens, long since destroyed. She saw herself as a child, running through the flowers, hand in hand with her mother. Laughter echoed… until it turned to screams. The memory shifted—fire, betrayal, the moment her father turned on the crown. The day her kingdom fell.

She dropped to her knees, tears streaking her face. The past was too heavy. The grief, still raw.

But she remembered Sylen’s words: "Survival is not weakness. It’s purpose."

Standing again, Aiko looked her younger self in the eyes. “You’re not my failure. You’re my fire.”

The shadows parted.

---

Sylen faced her own vision: the Royal Court, moments before she betrayed them. Her younger self stood before the throne, offering names and secrets to the enemy. She had done it to save someone—her sister, now long dead anyway.

“You’re a monster,” the court accused.

“No,” Sylen said aloud. “I was a survivor. And I regret nothing.”

Her vision shattered, the court burning behind her.

---

They emerged from the trial gasping. Fen regarded them quietly.

“You carry sorrow. And steel. Perhaps... that will suffice.”

The lake opened, revealing a stone pedestal at its center. Upon it rested the second fragment—this one shaped like a jagged shard of crystal, pulsing with blue flame.

As Aiko reached out, Fen whispered, “Each piece brings you closer. Not to salvation... but to choice.”

Aiko turned. “Choice?”

Fen’s face darkened. “The Void is not defeated by strength. Only understanding. Beware what you become to win.”

Elsewhere, in Hollowmere…

Ryo’s village was preparing for war. He stood beside Kiro, overlooking makeshift defenses. The people were scared. Some fled. Others took up old swords and farming tools.

Kiro hadn’t spoken in hours, but now he broke the silence. “I remember… a fire.”

Ryo glanced at him.

“I remember holding a blade. And blood. I think I was one of them. The Void’s tools.” He looked down at his hands. “But I don’t want to be that anymore.”

Ryo placed a hand on his shoulder. “Then don’t be.”

At dusk, a horn sounded from the forest.

The Void was coming.

---

Raiden stood among his soldiers, eyes fixed on Hollowmere’s smoke. His hands trembled. Not from fear—but from the war inside his mind.

He saw his mother, cradling a baby Ryo. Then he saw her burning, her screams rising with the flames.

“You could’ve saved them,” a voice inside whispered. “But you were weak.”

Raiden clenched his fists. “No more.”

He stepped forward, sword drawn, and pointed it toward the village. “Burn it all.”

---

On a distant cliff, Aiko and Sylen watched smoke rise from Hollowmere.

“We’re too late,” Aiko said, her voice trembling.

Sylen unsheathed her blades. “Then we carve a path through hell to get back.”

Aiko touched the new fragment at her chest. It was pulsing violently—reacting to something ahead.

To someone.

---

And beneath it all, something ancient stirred. A sleeping hunger, long buried by the old kingdoms. The more fragments awakened, the louder it heard the call.

And it was listening.
