Jindgi Na Milegi Dobara!

Jindgi Na Milegi Dobara!

Chapter 1: Shadows of the Night

The city never truly slept. Towering skyscrapers stretched into the night sky, their windows glinting like fragmented stars. Maya tightened her leather jacket around herself, the chill biting into her skin as she hurried down the empty street. The rhythmic click of her boots against the pavement seemed to echo too loudly, bouncing off the walls of the narrow alleyway.

She glanced at her phone—1:15 AM. A sigh slipped past her lips. Why did photography exhibitions always end so late? She adjusted the camera hanging from her neck, her prized possession, and quickened her pace. The city had a way of coming alive at night, but not always in the way one would hope. Dark alleys whispered secrets, and the occasional shout of a drunken brawl reverberated through the silence.

As Maya crossed a dimly lit intersection, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of being watched. Her instincts screamed at her to move faster, but curiosity tugged at her, forcing her to glance around. Nothing seemed out of place—just cold concrete and flickering lights. Taking a deep breath, she chided herself for being paranoid.

Suddenly, a chill ran down her spine. Maya stopped, heart pounding. A subtle noise—a footstep—caught her attention. Her instincts screamed at her to move, but fear rooted her in place. She dared a glance over her shoulder, and her breath hitched.

A man in a dark hoodie stood at the mouth of the alley, his eyes glinting ominously under the dim streetlight. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, and Maya felt her muscles tense. She took a hesitant step backward, her mind racing with escape plans. The man’s grin was twisted, and his presence oozed menace.

Before she could react, the man lunged at her. A blur shot past her—someone else intervened. The next thing Maya knew, the hooded man was on the ground, groaning in pain. Maya’s savior turned around, and she found herself staring into gentle, calm eyes that seemed to hold the weight of countless storms.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice soothing, almost musical. Maya nodded, words caught in her throat.

"Th-thank you," she managed to whisper.

The man gave a soft smile. "Be more careful. This part of town isn’t safe at night."

Maya hesitated. "Who... are you?"

He seemed to pause, as if considering the question. "Adrian," he replied simply.

Adrian looked down at the thug, whose groans had quieted. He crouched beside him, checking his pulse to ensure he hadn’t gone too far. Satisfied that the man was still breathing, he glanced back at Maya, offering a reassuring nod. She couldn’t help but notice how effortlessly calm he was—like danger was something he faced every day.

Before she could say more, Adrian glanced at the fallen thug, who had scrambled to his feet and was limping away. Adrian didn’t bother to chase him—his presence alone was enough to send the man running. Turning back to Maya, he gave her one last reassuring look before walking away, his silhouette disappearing into the darkness.

Maya stayed rooted, her mind spinning. Something about Adrian’s presence felt surreal, almost too calm for the chaos he had just ended. She glanced at the ground where the attacker had fallen—nothing remained but a smear of blood. She couldn’t help but replay the moment in her mind, wondering how someone could be so calm and composed while dealing with violence.

The darkness seemed to thicken, and a different figure emerged from the shadows—the same face, the same build, but something far more sinister in his eyes. This man leaned casually against the wall, lips twisted in a smirk.

"Getting yourself into trouble again, huh?" he sneered.

Maya froze. "A-Adrian?"

He gave a low, dark chuckle. "Not quite. The name’s Damien."

Her confusion was palpable, but Damien only winked, his smirk widening. He pushed off the wall, sauntering closer, his presence suffocating. Maya’s heart raced, and she couldn’t help but compare the stark difference between the two. Adrian’s warmth was replaced by a cold, intimidating aura that made her skin crawl.

"What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Damien teased. Maya instinctively took a step back, her instincts screaming danger. Damien’s grin softened into something almost affectionate, but the unsettling gleam never left his eyes.

"You’re too fragile," he murmured, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Someone might just break you."

She couldn’t breathe—couldn’t think. In the blink of an eye, Damien was gone, leaving Maya trembling under the flickering streetlight. Heart pounding, she forced herself to move, to get away from the suffocating darkness that still seemed to cling to her skin.

As she hurried down the street, her mind swirled with conflicting thoughts. Two men—twins, maybe? But something didn’t feel right. Their faces were identical, but their presence... worlds apart.

One brought comfort. The other, chaos.

She didn’t know it yet, but her life had just been pulled into a web of shadows, where love and danger would intertwine, and nothing would ever be the same again.
