Chapter 5: The Ghost Who Won’t Let Go
Ayaan was officially in trouble.
Not just because his house was haunted. Not just because there was an extra ghost lurking around. Not just because his rent was too cheap to be normal.
No. He was in trouble because of one, very simple, very terrifying fact.
He was getting attached.
To a ghost.
A ghost who had no name. A ghost who may or may not have a horrifying past. A ghost who had, just last night, saved his life from something far worse than himself.
And that was a problem.
Because ghosts weren’t supposed to make your heart race.
Ghosts weren’t supposed to sit too close when you were watching TV, their shoulder barely brushing yours.
Ghosts weren’t supposed to look at you like you were the only thing keeping them from falling apart.
Ayaan groaned, pressing a pillow to his face. "I need therapy."
The ghost, who had been watching him from across the room, raised an eyebrow. "Talking to yourself now?"
Ayaan peeked over the pillow. "Shut up."
The ghost smirked and floated toward him, sitting down on the couch beside him—too close, as always.
"Rough night?" the ghost asked.
Ayaan stared at him. "You mean the night where a horrifying shadow creature tried to break into my room and possibly eat my soul? No, not at all. Slept like a baby."
The ghost chuckled. "Liar."
Ayaan groaned. "This is my life now. Running on three hours of sleep and sarcasm."
The ghost tilted his head. "You could leave, you know."
Ayaan sighed. "Yeah, I could." He turned his head to look at the ghost. "But what about you?"
The ghost blinked. He hadn’t been expecting that.
Ayaan smiled tiredly. "If I leave, will you still be stuck here? Will that thing still come after you?"
The ghost didn’t answer.
And Ayaan realized he already knew.
A Dangerous Attachment
That night, Ayaan sat on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He could feel the ghost’s presence in the room—he was always near now.
It should’ve been creepy. It should’ve made Ayaan uncomfortable.
But it didn’t.
Instead, it felt… safe.
And wasn’t that the most messed-up thing of all?
With a sigh, Ayaan rolled onto his side. "Hey."
The ghost, who had been standing by the window, turned his head slightly.
Ayaan hesitated, then finally said, "If I try to leave, will you stop me?"
The ghost was silent for a long time.
Then—
"Maybe."
Ayaan swallowed.
"Because of the shadow thing?" he asked, forcing his voice to stay calm.
The ghost’s lips curved into a strange, unreadable smile. "That’s one reason."
Ayaan’s stomach flipped. "And the other?"
The ghost’s dark eyes locked onto his. "I like having you here."
Ayaan’s heart skipped. Damn it.
"You—You can’t just say things like that," Ayaan muttered, pulling his blanket over his face.
"Why not?"
"Because it’s weird!"
A soft chuckle. "I’m a ghost. Everything about me is weird."
Ayaan groaned. "You’re impossible."
The ghost just smirked.
And Ayaan?
Ayaan realized he was completely, utterly screwed.
Because he wasn’t afraid of the ghost anymore.
No—he was afraid of what he was starting to feel.
And ghosts weren’t supposed to make you feel like this.
Right?
