The Knight Who Dared To Love
Chapter 03
❝︎ Chapter 03: A Ride To Remember ❞︎
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
If he wasn’t assigned to me, I’d have him thrown into the dungeons.
Eva huffed, gripping the arms of her chair as Margret fussed over her hair.
Margret, a woman who had been with her since childhood, barely stifled a laugh as she ran a brush through Eva’s golden locks.
Margret (Maid)
The dungeons, my lady? Isn’t that a bit much?
Eva glared at their reflection in the mirror.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Not at all.
Margret twisted a strand of her hair, securing it with a pearl pin.
Margret (Maid)
Is he truly that terrible?
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Margret. He’s insufferable, and arrogant.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
And he looks at me as if I’m the problem.
She crossed her arms while Margret hummed.
Margret (Maid)
Well, you did spill a drink on him.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Whose side are you on?
Margret chuckled, pinning another curl in place.
Margret (Maid)
Yours, of course.
Margret (Maid)
But I’m simply saying, perhaps he has his reasons.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
He’s a knight. He should be honored to serve me.
Margret (Maid)
Ah, so you do sound like a noblewoman.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
How dare you?
Margret (Maid)
Tell me, my lady, did you give him a chance, or did you declare war on sight?
Eva huffed, looking away.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
He declared war first.
Margret (Maid)
Hmm, perhaps.
Silence settled for a moment as Margret continued styling her hair. Eva watched her in the mirror, feeling restless.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
This is not how I imagined my life after coming back.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
I thought I would have freedom.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Not a bodyguard shadowing my every step.
Margret (Maid)
Your family only wants you safe.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
I know. But I don’t need protection.
Margret met her gaze in the mirror.
Margret (Maid)
Then prove it.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
What do you mean?
Margret smirked, looking at Eva’s reflection as she brushed her hair.
Margret (Maid)
Outsmart him.
Margret (Maid)
If you don’t want a knight watching over you, make him believe you don’t need one.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
You know, Margret, I do like the way you think.
Margret patted her shoulder.
Margret (Maid)
I live to serve, miss Devereux.
Eva’s mind was already spinning with possibilities.
If Dominic Lancaster thought he could watch her easily, he had another thing coming.
Dominic had been on battlefields, stood before ruthless commanders, and faced men who wanted him dead.
None of it compared to the absolute nightmare of being assigned to Evangeline Devereux.
It had been less than a day, and already, she was making his job hell.
He stood at the entrance of the estate grounds, arms crossed, his emerald gaze scanning the gardens.
His first official day as her bodyguard, and where was she?
The guards had last seen her headed toward the stables.
But when Dominic arrived, there was no sign of her.
Just an empty stall and a very suspicious stable boy who refused to meet his gaze.
Dominic sighed, rubbing his temples.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Tell me where she went.
Dominic gave him a flat look.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Listen. I don’t have the patience for games.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Either you tell me where Lady Evangeline went, or I start making very big problems for you.
Stable Boy
She took a horse. Said she was going for a ride.
Stable Boy
And told me not to tell you.
Dominic clenched his jaw.
The wind rushed through Eva’s hair as she rode across the field, gripping the reins of her mare, Luna.
She knew Dominic would be furious, but that was exactly the point.
If he thought he could watch after her professionally, he was in for a long, miserable time.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Let’s see if he can keep up.
She whispered to her horse.
The sound of hooves pounding against the ground made her glance over her shoulder, only to see Dominic, riding fast, his black stallion closing the distance between them.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Slow down.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Don’t order me around.
He urged his horse forward.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Do you want to break your neck?
She laughed, enjoying the chase but then —
Her horse abruptly stepped backwards.
She gasped, gripping the reins as Luna tried to make a stop.
Dominic was already off his horse before she could fully regain control.
His hands caught her waist as she wobbled in the saddle, his grip strong, steady.
For a moment, they were too close, her breath hitching as she stared at him.
Then he set her down. Hard.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Are you insane?
His voice was low, sharp.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Do you have any idea how reckless that was?
She scowled, brushing dust off her skirts.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
I was fine.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
You could have been thrown.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
But I wasn’t.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
You think this is a game?
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
I think you are the problem and I do not need you.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
Tough. Because I’m not going anywhere.
She met his glare with her own.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Then I suppose we’re both going to be miserable.
Dominic smirked, stepping closer, voice dropping to a taunting whisper.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
You already look miserable.
Her lips parted, ready to snap back—
But then a voice called from behind.
Genevieve Margot Devereux
Evangeline!
Eva turned to see her mother, Genevieve, approaching them.
Dominic stepped back, his expression unreadable as he bowed his head slightly at the sight of Genevieve, to greet her.
Eva straightened, forcing a pleasant smile.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Mama.
Genevieve gave her a pointed look.
Genevieve Margot Devereux
I was told you ran off on horseback without an escort.
Eva waved a hand dismissively.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Oh, don’t worry, my escort was right behind me.
She glanced at Dominic with mock innocence. He stared back, unimpressed.
Genevieve sighed, exasperated.
Genevieve Margot Devereux
Evangeline, must you always be so difficult?
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
It’s a skill, Mama.
Genevieve turned to Dominic.
Genevieve Margot Devereux
Sir Lancaster, you must forgive my daughter. She is spirited.
Dominic gave a slight nod.
Dominic Callum Lancaster
So I’ve gathered.
Genevieve clapped her hands.
Genevieve Margot Devereux
Come, Eva. We have tea with the Duke this afternoon.
Evangeline Vivienne Devereux
Oh, wonderful.
She rolled her eyes before she started walking toward the carriage, but not before tossing Dominic one last look.
He raised a brow. Checkmate.
This war was far from over.
