Just a Fake Marriage!
Chapter 1
The rain lashed against the windows of Iris Bell's tiny apartment, each drop echoing the despair that had settled in her heart. She stared at the worn photograph on her bedside table - a smiling, youthful face framed by wispy white hair, her beloved grandmother, Amelia. Her grandmother's illness was a constant shadow, casting a darkness over her life. The medical bills piled higher each day, and Iris, a struggling artist with dreams of a vibrant career, felt the weight of responsibility crushing her spirit.
She reached for her phone, a notification flashing from her bank. Another rejection. The loan was a long shot, but it was her only hope. She had tried everything: selling her artwork, taking on odd jobs, even pawning some of her grandmother's antique jewelry. Nothing seemed to be enough.
She slumped onto the threadbare sofa, the worn fabric offering little solace. The apartment, filled with her paintings and sketches, felt more like a prison than a haven. Her dreams, once vibrant and full of color, now seemed as faded as the worn paint on the walls.
Suddenly, a knock at the door startled her. She jumped, her heart pounding in her chest. It was a man, tall and imposing, with eyes that held a hint of steel beneath their cool façade. He was dressed impeccably, a stark contrast to her own worn clothes and unkempt hair. She recognized him from a recent news article. Xyron Grey, a man known for his ruthless business tactics and a cold demeanor that could freeze the warmest heart.
"Miss Iris Bell?" he asked, his voice a deep, smooth baritone that sent a shiver down her spine. "I'm Xyron Grey. We have a proposition for you."
Iris's heart skipped a beat. She couldn't imagine why a man like him would be seeking her out. "A proposition?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Xyron Grey held her gaze, his eyes piercing hers. He took a step forward, his presence filling the doorway. "We have a way to help you, Miss Bell," he said, his voice a low purr that held a hint of menace. "A way to secure your future and your grandmother's well-being."
Iris stood frozen, a sense of foreboding settling over her. This encounter felt like a whirlwind, something she couldn't control, couldn't even comprehend. She knew, deep down, that something about Xyron Grey, something about his presence, was unsettling. But desperation, that powerful force, whispered in her ear, urging her to hear him out.
"Help?" she asked, her voice wavering. "What do you mean?"
"We're aware of your situation, Miss Bell," Xyron Grey said, his voice smooth and steady. "Your grandmother's illness, your financial struggles. We can help."
Iris, her heart pounding in her chest, glanced at the photograph of her grandmother. Amelia, her grandmother, was a woman who had faced adversity with grace and resilience. But even her strength was fading in the face of her illness. Iris knew, deep down, that this was her only chance.
"How?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Xyron Grey smiled, a slight curve of his lips that did little to soften his austere features. "There are ways to secure financial stability, Miss Bell," he said, his eyes holding a hint of calculation. "Ways that can alleviate your burden and ensure your grandmother's well-being."
Iris felt a chill run down her spine. Something about his words, the way he spoke, made her uneasy. He was too smooth, too calculated. But she was desperate, and hope, fragile and flickering, flickered within her.
"What kind of ways?" she asked, her voice filled with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
Xyron Grey leaned closer, his presence filling the narrow hallway, his eyes never leaving hers. "A proposition, Miss Bell," he said, his voice a low, suggestive murmur. "A proposition that could change your life."
He paused, his gaze lingering on her, making her feel as though he was reading her thoughts, analyzing her desperation. He was playing a game, and she was the pawn.
"A fake marriage," he said, his voice smooth as silk, his eyes glittering with a predatory gleam. "A mutually beneficial arrangement."
The words, like a bolt of lightning, struck her with a force that left her breathless. A fake marriage? It was an absurd idea, a ridiculous suggestion, but hope, that fleeting, fragile thing, flickered within her.
