Shadows of the Past

Chapter 1: The Gathering

The sun had just set over the small town of Eldridge, casting a warm orange glow over the streets and homes. Maya, a skeptical journalist, sat at her cluttered desk, scrolling through her emails on her laptop. Her phone buzzed, and she picked it up to see a message from her best friend, Jake.

"Hey, you in for the weekend? Ethan's got a plan," the message read.

Maya raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. Ethan, a charismatic true-crime podcaster, had always been the adventurous one in their group of friends. She typed back quickly, "What's the plan?"

A few moments later, Jake replied, "Ghost hunting at Blackthorn Manor. You know, the haunted mansion with the murders?"

Maya's heart skipped a beat. The stories surrounding Blackthorn Manor were legendary - whispers of a family slaughtered in their home, the killer never caught. It was a tale that had haunted the town for decades. She hesitated, recalling the last time they'd gone on one of Ethan's escapades. It had ended with them lost in the woods, terrified and laughing at their own foolishness.

"Count me in," she finally replied, excitement bubbling within her.

The next evening, the group gathered at Jake's house, their backpacks filled with flashlights, snacks, and a Ouija board. Ethan paced the living room, his eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.

"This is going to be epic! Blackthorn Manor is the perfect place to test our ghost-hunting skills," he said, his voice dripping with excitement.

Lila, Ethan's girlfriend, rolled her eyes. "You mean your obsession with true crime? This isn't a podcast episode, Ethan."

"Exactly! It's real life," he shot back, a grin spreading across his face. "And we're going to uncover the truth."

Ryan, the quiet one of the group, chimed in, "I heard the spirits are restless. They say the killer still roams the halls."

Maya felt a chill run down her spine. "You guys are just trying to scare me, right?"

Ethan leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "What if we could actually communicate with them? What if we could find out what happened?"

Jake clapped his hands together, breaking the tension. "Alright, let's get going before it gets too dark. We'll set up at the mansion and see what we can find."

As they drove through the winding roads leading to Blackthorn Manor, the trees loomed like sentinels, their branches clawing at the sky. The mansion appeared suddenly, a dark silhouette against the twilight. Its windows were like hollow eyes, watching them approach.

"Here we are," Jake announced, parking the car. The group stepped out, the air thick with anticipation. Maya felt a mix of excitement and dread as they walked toward the entrance, the wooden door creaking ominously as Ethan pushed it open.

Inside, the air was stale, filled with the scent of mildew and decay. Dust motes danced in the beams of their flashlights as they stepped into the grand foyer. The walls were lined with faded portraits, the eyes of the subjects seeming to follow them as they moved.

"Let's set up in the parlor," Ethan suggested, leading the way. "That's where the most activity has been reported."

As they entered the parlor, Maya's heart raced. The room was filled with antique furniture, draped in white sheets like ghosts waiting to be unveiled. A large, ornate table sat in the center, its surface marred by time.

"Perfect," Ethan said, rubbing his hands together. "Let's get the Ouija board out."

Lila hesitated. "Are we really going to do this? It feels... wrong."

"Come on, it's just a game," Ryan reassured her. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Maya felt a knot form in her stomach but pushed it aside. They were here for an adventure, after all. As they gathered around the table, Ethan placed the Ouija board in front of them, the planchette resting in the center.

"Alright, everyone, place your fingers on the planchette," Ethan instructed, his excitement palpable. "We're going to reach out to the spirits of Blackthorn Manor."

As they began, the atmosphere shifted. The air grew colder, and a sense of unease settled over the group. Maya glanced at Jake, who looked just as apprehensive.

"Is anyone else feeling this?" she whispered.

"Yeah," he replied, his voice low. "It's like the house is alive."

Ethan closed his eyes, focusing intently. "Spirits of Blackthorn, we call to you. Show us the truth."

The planchette began to move, gliding across the board with an unsettling grace. Maya's heart raced as she felt a chill run down her spine. The letters began to spell out words, each one sending a jolt of fear through her.

"R-E-V-E-N-G-E," it spelled, and the room fell silent.

"What does that mean?" Lila asked, her voice trembling.

Ethan's eyes sparkled with a mix of fear and excitement. "It means they want to tell us something. We need to keep going."

Maya exchanged worried glances with Jake, who looked equally uneasy. "Maybe we should stop," she suggested, her voice barely above a whisper.

But Ethan was undeterred. "No, we can't stop now. We need to know what happened here."

As they continued, the planchette moved again, spelling out "F-I-N-D-H-I-M."

"Find who?" Maya asked, her voice shaking.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway, causing them all to jump. The sound of something heavy falling reverberated through the house, and the lights flickered ominously.

"Did you hear that?" Ryan asked, his eyes wide with fear.

Ethan stood up, his curiosity piqued. "I’ll check it out. Stay here."

"Are you crazy? You can't go alone!" Maya protested, but Ethan was already striding toward the door.

"Just stay put. I’ll be right back," he called over his shoulder.

As he disappeared into the darkness, the remaining friends exchanged nervous glances. The atmosphere in the room had shifted, the air thick with tension.

"Maybe we should leave," Lila suggested, her voice barely above a whisper.

Before anyone could respond, Ethan returned, his face pale. "You guys need to see this."

He led them down the hallway to a hidden room behind a bookshelf. The door creaked open, revealing a small, dusty space filled with old newspapers and strange artifacts. In the center of the room lay a rusted dagger, its blade glinting ominously in the dim light.

"Look at this," Ethan said, picking up the dagger. "It’s just like the one used in the murders."

Maya felt a wave of nausea wash over her. "Ethan, this is not a game. We need to leave."

But Ethan was already rifling through the newspapers, his eyes wide with excitement. "These articles... they detail the murders, but there are also recent cases. Look!" He held up a Polaroid of a hiker, staged similarly to the Blackthorn family.

"Why do you have this?" Jake asked, his voice rising in alarm.

Ethan shrugged, a manic grin spreading across his face. "I needed to understand the killer's mind. This is all part of the story."

Maya felt a chill creep up her spine. "This isn't just a story, Ethan. This is real life, and people are dead."

Before Ethan could respond, a loud bang echoed from the parlor, followed by a bloodcurdling scream. They rushed back to find Lila standing frozen, staring at the wall where a shadowy figure had just vanished.

"What was that?" she gasped, her voice trembling.

"I don’t know, but we need to get out of here," Maya insisted, her heart racing.

As they turned to leave, the door slammed shut, trapping them inside. Panic surged through the group as they pounded on the door, but it wouldn’t budge.

"Let us out!" Ryan shouted, his voice filled with desperation.

Suddenly, the lights flickered again, and the temperature dropped. A whisper echoed through the room, chilling them to the bone. "You should not have come here."

Maya's breath caught in her throat. "We need to find a way out. Now!"
