Chapter 14 : DECOY

The cafe, usually a place of quiet refuge, felt like a pressure cooker. Eric's anger, his hurt, was palpable, but Elian barely registered it. All he could focus on was the message on Elara's phone, the chilling words that confirmed his worst fears: "Your little tryst has consequences. I told you not to get close to Elian Vance. Now you will face the consequences."

He saw the fear in Elara's eyes . He wanted to pull her close, to protect her, but he knew that wasn't enough. They were in this together, and they had to face it together.

"We need to go," Elara whispered, her voice trembling.

He nodded, his jaw clenched tight. He threw some bills on the table, ignoring Eric's parting shot, and steered Elara out of the cafe. He could feel Eric's eyes on their backs, burning with resentment, but he didn't care. His priority was Elara, her safety, their future.

Outside, the cool air did little to calm the storm raging inside him. "This changes everything," Elara said, her voice laced with panic. "They know. They're watching us."

His grip on her hand tightened. "We knew this was a risk," he said, trying to project a confidence he didn't entirely feel. "But we won't back down. I won't let them hurt you."

He looked at her, his heart aching. He wanted to tell her how much she meant to him, how this whole mess, this dangerous game they were playing, was worth it, just to be with her. But now wasn't the time. They had to focus.

"We need to find out who's behind this," he said, his voice grim. "Who's threatening us."

They spent the rest of the day in his apartment, surrounded by books and documents, trying to make sense of the clues. He saw the same determination in Elara's eyes that he felt in his own heart. They wouldn't be intimidated. They wouldn't be silenced.

"We need to think smart," Elian said, his voice low and determined. "They want us to panic, to disappear. That's exactly what we won't do."

Elara looked at him, a flicker of understanding in her eyes. "You have an idea, don't you?"

Elian nodded. "We're going to give them a show. We're going to give them a show."

He explained his plan. They would use the leaked photo, the rumors, the gossip, to their advantage. They would play the part of a couple caught up in dramatic relationship turmoil, a distraction so compelling that no one would suspect what they were really doing. The key was, the campus didn't know it was Elara in the photo. They would leverage that anonymity.

"It's risky," Elara said, but she was already starting to see the brilliance in his plan. "But it might just work."

The next day, Elara and Elian put on their performance. They met at a crowded campus coffee shop, their body language radiating tension. Elara crossed her arms, her expression tight. Elian gestured animatedly, his voice rising and falling in what sounded like an argument.

"I can't believe you did that!" Elara exclaimed, loud enough for several nearby students to hear.

"I told you, it was a mistake!" Elian retorted, running a hand through his hair. "And now it's all over the internet!"

They continued their "argument" for several minutes, their voices laced with accusations and hurt feelings. They even staged a dramatic parting, Elara storming off in one direction, Elian stalking off in another. Only their closest friends, those who knew about their relationship, recognized the performance for what it was. The rest of the campus was left guessing, wondering about the identity of the mystery girl.

While the campus was distracted by their "relationship drama," Elara and Elian slipped away to follow a new lead they had discovered in their research. A cryptic symbol, etched into an ancient artifact, pointed to a secluded location near the lake, a place known locally as "Whispering Pines."

They drove in silence, the tension between them now a different kind โ€“ a shared excitement, a sense of purpose. The charade had worked. They were off the radar, free to pursue the truth, at least for now.

As they reached the winding road that led to Whispering Pines, Elara couldn't help but smile. "You know," she said, "we're actually pretty good at this acting thing."

Elian grinned. "Maybe we should consider a career change after we expose the Serpent's Coil."

But the laughter died in their throats as they parked the car near the edge of the lake. The area was eerily deserted. The moon cast long, distorted shadows across the still water, creating an unsettling atmosphere. The wind whispered through the tall pine trees, their branches swaying like skeletal arms.

They walked along a narrow path that snaked through the trees, the only sound the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. An old, abandoned boathouse stood at the end of the path, its wooden planks weathered and gray. It was this boathouse that the cryptic symbol on the artifact had pointed to.

As they approached the boathouse, Elara felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck. She could feel it. The hair on her arms stood on end. Their performance might have fooled the campus, but what if The suspect is watching them .
