First Love
My boyfriend of six years, who had given me comfort and encouragement during the hardest time in my life, betrayed me. He was a sweetheart, my everything, and I gave him all I could offer. He promised me a home, a ring, his love, and a family. Rafael grew up without a dad, which made him incredibly family-oriented. He always talked about how he never wanted his kids to experience the same void he felt growing up. We promised each other that we would never let our kids grow up without both a mom and dad and vowed to stay together no matter what.
But it all went downhill when he got promoted in his company. When he called me and said, “Honey, I got promoted as an engineering manager. My old friends asked me out for a drink. I’m sorry, I will be late. I’ll be home soon. I love you.” I was delighted and replied, “I will cook your favorite food, so come home soon. I love you more.”
I was so happy that I started preparing so when he got home we could also celebrate his promotion. I decided to make the evening extra special. I pulled out his favorite dress of mine, a stunning red one that he always said made me look like a movie star. I slipped it on, feeling a rush of excitement and anticipation. I then set the table with our best plates and lit some candles, their soft glow casting a warm, romantic light across the room. I wanted everything to be perfect for him.
I cooked his favorite meal, the aroma filling the house with the scent of garlic, rosemary, and roasted chicken. I even baked a chocolate cake, his favorite dessert, and set it on the counter, waiting for him to come home and enjoy.
As I waited for Rafael to come home, I couldn’t help but reminisce about our journey together. I recalled the early days of our relationship, the late-night conversations, the shared dreams, and the countless promises we made to each other. I thought about the time he surprised me with a weekend getaway to the mountains, where we spent hours hiking and talking about our future. Those memories felt like a lifetime ago.
The clock ticked away, and with each passing minute, my excitement turned into worry. It was unlike Rafael to be this late without a call or message. I tried to reassure myself, thinking maybe he was caught up in the celebration with his friends. But a nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach told me something was off.
Finally, I heard the sound of his car pulling into the driveway. My heart raced as I rushed to the door, eager to see him and share the special evening I had prepared. But when he walked in, I immediately knew something was wrong. His eyes avoided mine, and he looked disheveled, a stark contrast to the confident and composed man I knew.
“Rafael, what happened? Are you okay?” I asked, my voice trembling with concern.
He sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. “We need to talk,” he said, his voice heavy with a seriousness that sent chills down my spine.
As he began to speak, the words that came out of his mouth shattered the world I had built around us. Betrayal, lies, and secrets spilled out, each one a dagger to my heart. The man I thought I knew, the man who promised me forever, had been hiding a side of himself I never imagined.
In that moment, surrounded by the remnants of a romantic evening that would never be, I felt my heart break into a million pieces. The life we had planned, the dreams we shared, all seemed to crumble before my eyes. And as Rafael stood there, a stranger in the place of the man I loved, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again.
