Aurélie's heart was racing as she saw the figure standing in the shadows. It was a woman, tall and imposing, with piercing green eyes.
"Who are you?" Aurélie demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.
The woman didn't respond, didn't even move. She just kept watching Aurélie, her eyes fixed on her with an unnerving intensity.
Étienne stepped forward, his eyes locked on the woman. "What do you want?" he asked, his voice firm.
The woman still didn't respond, but Aurélie saw a flicker of movement in her eyes. It was a tiny movement, but it was enough to make Aurélie realize that the woman was not alone.
There were others with her, others who were hiding in the shadows.
Aurélie's eyes scanned the darkness, trying to see who else was there. But she couldn't see anyone, couldn't even sense their presence.
It was as if they were ghosts, invisible and silent.
The woman finally moved, stepping forward into the light. Aurélie saw that she was dressed in a long, black coat, with a wide-brimmed hat pulled low over her face.
"I am Madame LeFleur," the woman said, her voice low and husky. "And I have been sent to deliver a message to you, Aurélie."
Aurélie's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. What kind of message could Madame LeFleur possibly have for her?
"What is it?" Aurélie asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Madame LeFleur smiled, her eyes glinting with amusement. "You are getting close to the truth, Aurélie," she said. "Very close indeed. And that is why I have been sent to warn you."
Aurélie's eyes widened in surprise. "Warn me?" she repeated. "What do you mean?"
Madame LeFleur's smile grew wider. "You are playing with fire, Aurélie," she said. "You are uncovering secrets that are meant to remain hidden. And if you continue down this path, you will put yourself in grave danger."
Aurélie felt a shiver run down her spine as she listened to Madame LeFleur's words. She knew that she was taking a risk by investigating the mystery of the Louvre, but she had never realized just how much danger she was in.
"What do you want me to do?" Aurélie asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Madame LeFleur's eyes seemed to bore into Aurélie's soul. "I want you to stop investigating," she said. "I want you to leave the past alone and focus on the present."
Aurélie felt a surge of anger at Madame LeFleur's words. How could she possibly expect Aurélie to just drop the investigation and walk away?
But as she looked into Madame LeFleur's eyes, Aurélie saw something there that gave her pause. It was a glimmer of fear, a hint of desperation.
Madame LeFleur was not just trying to scare Aurélie off, she was trying to protect her.
Aurélie's mind was racing with possibilities as she tried to process what Madame LeFleur had just told her. She knew that she had to be careful, that she had to watch her back.
But she also knew that she couldn't just give up. She had to see the investigation through to the end, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
As Madame LeFleur turned to leave, Aurélie called out to her. "Wait," she said. "Who sent you to warn me?"
Madame LeFleur turned back, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Someone who cares about you, Aurélie," she said. "Someone who wants to see you safe."
Aurélie's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. Who could it be? Who could possibly care about her enough to send Madame LeFleur to warn her?
As Madame LeFleur disappeared into the night, Aurélie turned to Étienne. "What do you think?" she asked. "Who do you think sent Madame LeFleur to warn me?"
Étienne's eyes were thoughtful, his brow furrowed in concentration. "I don't know," he said. "But I think we should be careful. We don't know what we're up against."
Aurélie nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. She knew that she had to be careful, that she had to watch her back.
But she also knew that she couldn't just give up. She had to see the investigation through to the end, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
As they walked away from the scene, Aurélie felt a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to uncover the truth, no matter what.
