The Wrong Kind Of Home Coming
The ball room was filled with guests and old friends.
Each one of them brought a different memory.
But none of those memories seemed to please my aching heart.
Old Friends
Welcome back, Madelyn.
Madelyn Marcella
Thanks...It’s good to be back.
I murmured, forcing a smile.
All this was supposed to be for celebrating my home coming.
But somehow, it just didn’t feel like home.
All that mattered was that I keep that fake smile and act as if I am enjoying my time.
I roamed the ball room thinking about Luca, art school, London, and all the stuff I might have been enjoying if my parents haven’t dragged me back to Venice.
Mrs. Marcella
Thank you all for attending with us this
Mrs. Marcella
We are the happiest for having our beloved daughter, Madelyn, back home with us.
Mrs. Marcella
And to celebrate this, we are happy to announce Madelyn’s engagement to Marco Bellini!
Madelyn Marcella
Engagement?!
My voice trembled as disbelief flooded me
Madelyn Marcella
I didn’t agree to this!
Madelyn Marcella
How could you do this to me?
The room feel silent as disbelief settled over the once cheerful crowd.
My friends stared, wide-eyed, and I could feel the weight of their expectations.
Mrs. Marcella
Madelyn, please,
My mother said with shock in her eyes.
Mrs. Marcella
We thought you’d be happy.
I laughed bitterly as tears welled up in my eyes.
Madelyn Marcella
You thought making my decisions would make me happy?
Madelyn Marcella
You don’t even know me!
Without waiting for a reply,
I spun around and dashed out of the ballroom, the laughter morphing into a mocking echo behind me.
The cool night air hit me like a wave of ice.
I collapsed onto the balcony, sobbing into my hands.
Madelyn Marcella
Why is this happening?
I cried, staring up at the indifferent stars.
Madelyn Marcella
This isn’t fair!
Marco’s voice broke through the chaos, and he rushed outside, worry etched on his face.
Marco Bellini
Please....talk to me.
I spat, anger mixing with despair.
Madelyn Marcella
What is there to say?
Madelyn Marcella
You’re part of this!
Madelyn Marcella
You’re just going along with it!
Marco Bellini
I thought you liked me!
He exclaimed, stepping closer, desperation in his eyes.
Madelyn Marcella
It’s not about you!
Madelyn Marcella
I don’t want this!
Madelyn Marcella
I don’t want to be engaged, I don’t want a life planned for me.
Madelyn Marcella
I want to be free!
Marco Bellini
Then tell them!
Marco urged, his voice gentle.
Marco Bellini
Tell them how you feel!
I shook my head, tears streaming down my face.
Madelyn Marcella
It’s too late for that!
Madelyn Marcella
No one listens to me.
Madelyn Marcella
They only see what they want!
Marco Bellini
Madelyn, please....
He reached out for me, but I stepped back, shaking my head in despair.
Madelyn Marcella
I can’t....I can’t live like this.
My heart shattered as I whispered.
Madelyn Marcella
I feel so lost.
Marco Bellini
Then we’ll find your way together.
Marco said softly, desperation tinged with hope.
Madelyn Marcella
I don’t know if there’s a way back for me.
I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
I felt utterly alone even in his presence.
