The cold, damp air of the basement hit Ava like a wall. The air hung thick with the scent of dust and something metallic, like old blood.

Her flashlight beam danced across the rough stone walls, revealing cobwebs and shadows that seemed to writhe in the dim light.

The switch, a simple toggle hidden behind a loose brick, had clicked open the door, and now, the reality of the situation slammed into her.

There, in the center of the room, was a young boy, no older than ten. He was slumped against a cold, concrete pillar, his wrists bound with thick rope.

His eyes, wide with a mixture of fear and exhaustion, met hers. Relief flooded through Ava, a powerful wave that almost made her stumble.

Her voice cracking with emotion. She rushed towards him, her heart pounding in her chest.

She could see the marks where the ropes had chafed against his wrists.

Ava reached into her bag, fumbling for her pocket knife. The metal glinted in the flashlight beam as she carefully began to saw through the rope.

They... they said I couldn't tell anyone *stammered, his eyes fixed on the knife*

Who said that, Leo? *asked gently, focusing on her task*

The... the bad men *whispered, his voice catching in his throat*

They said.....they said they'd hurt that person who will help me

Ava's blood ran cold. She worked faster, her fingers clumsy with a sudden surge of adrenaline.

Don't worry, Leo. You're safe now. We'll make sure they can't hurt anyone.

Just breathe, okay? It'll be over soon.

Finally, with a satisfying snap, the rope parted. Ava gently rubbed Leo's wrists and ankles, checking for any serious injuries.

He winced, but didn't cry.

Okay, let's get you out of here. *helping him to sit up*

Leo nodded, pushing himself up with surprising strength. He swayed, but managing to stand.

Ava instructed, putting an arm around his shoulders.

As they moved towards the door, Ava couldn't shake the feeling that they were not alone. The shadows in the basement seemed to deepen, and a sense of dread washed over her. They had to get out, and they had to do it fast.
