≈NAOMI≈
Last night, I dreamed of a small wolf. Yes, a white wolf that watched me hidden among a cotton plantation with curious eyes. When it noticed me walking, instead of running away, it allowed me to approach and feel the softness of its fur in my hands. It was strange because while I did, the wolf seemed to communicate with me mentally, as if it understood my thoughts and what I was feeling…
Suddenly, Mariel's voice broke the trance.
"Get up, sleepyhead! We’ll be late for school!"she called from the doorway. I smiled upon hearing her, and after stretching, I leaned back against the bed’s headboard.
"Good morning" I said with a smile, watching her leave a uniform at the foot of the bed. "I’ll let you change; I’ll wait for you in the dining room for breakfast together. Don’t take too long; Demian hates being late, and he’ll leave without us. I nodded as she returned to the door and closed it behind her. As soon as I got up, I headed to the bathroom and took a quick shower, letting the hot water wake me up completely. After finishing, I changed clothes, brushed my teeth, and tied my hair back into a ponytail before heading to the dining room where Mariel was already waiting for me."
Upon arriving, I greeted the women in the kitchen who were busy preparing breakfast. They exchanged glances of surprise and began whispering behind my back, realizing I wasn’t a wolf. “Oh, how shocking! Wasn’t it obvious?!” I thought mentally, restraining myself from rolling my eyes.
Attempting to disguise my discomfort, I sat down to breakfast with Mariel and Lesly, who greeted me warmly and maternally. I liked this woman.
"Apologies from your godfather, Naomi," "she said as soon as she noticed that I was looking for him"Jose is in an important meeting; that’s why he’s not joining us right now.
"Demian isn’t here either"Mariel chimed in with her mouth full, gulping down a toast "don’t take it personally; it’s not because of you. He just doesn’t usually have breakfast with us."
"I thought it was because he didn’t like me."Mariel and Lesly smiled. "He’s a bit…reluctant with humans, but you’ll see, he’ll warm up to you eventually." "Lesly said, giving me a reassuring smile"How did you spend the night? Were you able to rest well?""she asked, changing the subject.
"Yes, thank you, Lesly. Everything is perfect."I can’t tell you how glad I am to hear that.
"Beep beep!" Suddenly, the constant sound of a horn echoed.
"This can’t be possible…"Mariel complained, glancing at the time on her wristwatch. Beep beep!
"I’m coming!"she exclaimed irritably, getting to her feet "Time to go, Nao. As you can see, my brother is a bit impatient. Bye, Mom!"
"See you later, Mrs. Lesly."
"See you soon, girls. Have a great day!" "she said as we walked towards the main entrance. Once outside the mansion, Mariel didn't take long to raise her voice..."
"What’s your problem?"she challenged. Demian scrutinized me from head to toe and replied: "You mean besides having to look after the human?"he sneered, pointing at me with disdain "Because, if you didn’t notice, I have my own matters to attend to. I lowered my head and walked towards the car in silence. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to respond to him, but the fact that he was my godfather’s son limited me from telling him to go to hell…"
“Ignoring the idiot is better. He isn’t worth it,” I convinced myself as I got into the car, settling into the back seat while he put the key in the ignition and Mariel sat beside him.
"Put it on"he ordered, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
"Excuse me?" "I asked, frowning."
"He’s referring to your seatbelt,"Mariel interjected with a sarcastic smile "Excuse him, Naomi; he thinks that just saying “put it on” means everyone understands what he’s talking about."
I clenched my jaw and, with a sudden movement, obliged him by putting it on. He smirked slightly, almost as if he relished having control over me.
As he started the car and pulled toward the exit, I looked out the window. I think it was the only way I found to keep from losing my temper. Finally, when he turned onto the road, I took in the daytime scenery; the town wasn’t so different from my hometown. In fact, it was more similar than I had thought.
Thank God, the journey to the school only took a few minutes, but if I had known what awaited me, I would have barricaded myself in the vehicle…
As soon as Demian parked the car and we got out, all eyes were on us—or rather, on me.
“You're going to be a popular human,” Demian said sarcastically. “Don’t stray too far, Little Red Riding Hood, or you’ll become some wolf's lunch.”
“Ha, ha, how funny,” Mariel reprimanded. “Finally, you’re here, Demi!” exclaimed Ursula, who came running and threw herself into his arms. Mariel rolled her eyes and made gestures of disgust when he kissed her.
“Come on, Naomi, I’ll show you a priority place you need to know.”
“A priority place?”
“Yes, darling,” he reiterated, linking his arm with mine. “In cases like this, you need to know where to throw up.”
“Are you leaving already, sister-in-law?” Ursula asked, watching us leave. Mariel stopped in her tracks.
“Don’t call me sister-in-law. You know very well that I don’t identify with that word,” she warned with a grimace. “And if you don’t have anything more interesting to suggest than for me to stay here watching you suck face with my brother, I’d appreciate it if you’d refrain from saying anything. My patience has limits, and believe me, you’ve far exceeded them.”
“Are you taking charge?” Demian asked, ignoring the comment.
“Yeah, I’ll take charge. Come on, Naomi.” "Taking charge of what?" I heard Ursula ask. I perked up my ears, but I couldn’t catch anything.
“Is it just me, or does Ursula not like you?” I asked Mariel when we had walked far enough away.
“She’s never liked me,” she admitted. “She’s not a good match for my brother. There are thousands of women much better than her, but no, he seems hell-bent on sticking with her. I swear, Naomi, I can’t understand his obsession. He hasn’t even marked her. Can you believe that?”
“Marked?” I asked, struggling not to laugh. In my mind, “bad thoughts,” I imagined the natural way wolves mark their territory. Do they chase them around to urinate on them? “Oh, you little devil! What are you thinking?!” she said, laughing. “It's not anything like that!” she protested.
“I’m sorry!” I apologized, laughing. “It’s just that when you said ‘marked,’ the idea of a wolf avoiding such an instinctive act as urinating seems so absurd that I find it hard to keep a straight face.”
“That's not how wolves mark their mates,” she said with a smile. “There are many things you need to learn, but there will be time for that. Let’s go inside; we still have plenty to do.”
