As the plane soared through the clouds, Lily stared out the window, the city lights below growing smaller and smaller until they disappeared completely.
Her best friend, Yumi, had called her just days after the accident.

“Lily, you don’t have to say it, but I know you’re not okay,”

“Come to Korea. Stay with me for a while. You need a fresh start, and I’ll be here to help you.”
At first, Lily had hesitated. Running away felt like giving up. But the truth was, she couldn’t stay. Everywhere she went, she was reminded of what she’d lost—her dream, her connection to her mother, and the person she thought Ethan was.
In Korea, she could start over. No one would ask her about Ethan, no one would pity her, and most importantly, no one would expect her to smile when all she wanted to do was scream.
I waited at the arrivals gate, my heart pounding with anticipation. It had been years since I last saw Lily in person, but we’d always stayed close, like sisters across the ocean. She was the strongest, brightest person I knew—someone who could lift anyone’s spirits with just a laugh.
But when I finally spotted her, my breath caught in my throat.
The girl walking toward me wasn’t the Lily I remembered.
Her once radiant smile was gone, replaced by a blank, distant expression. Her eyes, those beautiful, lively eyes that used to shine with determination and joy, were now red and swollen, heavy with unshed tears. Her movements were slow, mechanical, as if each step took all the energy she had left. She looked like a ghost of herself—a hollow shell of the girl I loved like a sister.

Lily!” I called out, rushing toward her
She looked up, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of relief in her eyes. But it vanished just as quickly, leaving behind a vacant stare.
I threw my arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. Her body felt so small, so fragile, like she might break if I held her too hard. She didn’t hug me back—she just stood there, limp, like she didn’t know how to respond.

My chest tightened as I pulled away to look at her. “Lily, are you okay?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer.
Fine. That word was a lie, and we both knew it.
I grabbed her suitcase and led her to my car, trying to hold back the tears threatening to spill. As I drove us home, I glanced at her in the passenger seat. She stared out the window, her face expressionless, as if she wasn’t really here at all.
My heart broke a little more with every passing moment. This wasn’t the Lily who used to dance in my living room or stay up all night dreaming about her future on the ice. This was someone who had lost everything—her dream, her spark, her very self.
And I hated whoever had done this to her
As we pulled into my apartment parking lot, I reached over and gently touched her hand.

“You’re staying with me now,”

“We’ll get through this together. I promise.”
She looked at me, her eyes glistening with tears she refused to let fall.

“Thank you, Yumi,” she whispered.
I helped her inside, and as she settled onto the couch, I made a silent vow to myself: I would do whatever it took to bring Lily back—to bring back the girl who once lit up every room she entered.
Because she wasn’t just my best friend. She was my sister. And I wasn’t going to let her fade away.
